I'm currently in Italy for new years and here there still are tobacconists here and there in the cities. I just came home after walking around in the medieval town of Peruggia. Gigantic stone houses, churches and narrow alleys with boutiques and restaurants sprinkled around the city. Beautiful!
I found a tobacco shop that carried some very nice pipes - Savinelli ofcourse but also some Viprati and Caminetto ones. Also the odd Peterson. There wasn't one that really jumped out forcing me to buy it but it's nice to be able to see the pipes live and displayed instead of just on the Internet. Are there still specialist tobacconists where you are?

I'm in central N.C. and we have an independent pipe shop near a large campus (NCSU), a chain Tinder Box, and another pipe shop out in the 'burbs. I think this is a very unusual situation. Hope it lasts.

Here in Toronto we still have a few, but tobacco prices are high and pipe selection is limited. Despite that fact, I still support my local tobacconists by purchasing the over-taxed tins which go for more than double the price of a typical US-based on line distributer.
We must support our local B&Ms, otherwise they will simply disappear.
However I do purchase online and from US B&Ms and stock up when I get the opportunity.

Here in Covington, Louisiana, there is Jewels Tobacconist downtown. 90 minutes east in Biloxi is the Epitome, 30 minutes South is Mayan Imports, which has a large selection of pipes and tobaccos. Mayan Imports also has shops in New Orleans, in the Vieux Carre and on Magazine in the garden district. There was Bayou Tobacco in Baton Rouge, 60 minutes west, but I do not know if they are still open. Pipers Haven in Lafayette is 2 hours from here. Habana Port is also in Metairie and Baton Rouge, and they used to carry pipes and a wide range of tins, but I haven't been there in a while.

We have a great and well stocked shop with a gifted tobacconist at the helm. Plus a large walk in humidor for cigar smokers. They carry everything from board pipes to danish carvers, petersons, dunhills, Wiley's, 4th gen, Kirsten, and many many more...plus a cabinet of meers, a wonderful place to hang out since they have something for everyone, and there's a smoking club two doors down. The shop is located in mid-town Anchorage.

I am very lucky to have four great shops here in Columbus, Ohio. We have a Tinder Box, Barclay's, Smoker's Haven, and Pipes and Pleasures. We are also fortunate to have Tim West, Jesse Jones and Premal Chheda here as well! The Tinder Box is my "go to" shop, but I do visit the others as well.

I live in upstate NY, and while Albany and Clifton Park have great shops, I live out in the sticks. I am near a nice little town called Cobleskill, which only has those terrible cigarette shops. I can't help but wonder if having a good tobacco shop out in the country would pull out the old pipe smokers and get some nice tobacco back in their pipes. I see them out here and there, but mostly you don't see the other pipe smokers, but I know there are more than you see.

I am in Southern Indiana, near Louisville, KY. We have a couple on this side of the river and a couple on the KY side. This past week I visited one in Bloomington,IN that rivals anything in Louisville.
There are several more local smoke shops that carry cobs and the Dr. pipes. Most of their tobacco is just OTC stuff.

+1 Briar and Burley in Bloomington, Indiana.
In Maryland, Cross Street Tobacco, located in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, and Faders in the Baltimore suburb of Towson are worth stopping in.
While traveling in London, I happened into a nice little tobacconist's shop in Covent Gardens called Segar & Snuff, they had several blends I really enjoyed - I highly recommend 'Old Smokey'.

Here in Oregon, I commute between Salem (the capitol, where i live), and Portland for work.
82nd Avenue Tobacco & Pipe has a great selection, is incredibly friendly, and tends to under-weigh bulk tobacco if you're nice. :D However, they sell glass pipes and smoking accessories for the other leaf, which (for me) detracts from the experience. Their staff is hit-and-miss on knowing about pipe tobacco, much less having ever smoked it. They are one of the few locations in the city with a cigar lounge. (No pipe smoking inside though).
Cascade Cigar & Tobacco is right near my work and has a much larger facility and a good selection of pipes too. A plus here is that they don't get a lot of foot traffic like Rich's (below), and is less cramped than 82nd so they tend to have more time to chat.
Rich's Cigar Store downtown has a great feel to it, selling pipes, cigars, and... a ton of magazines. Much like the old drugstore feel of my Pennsylvania youth, the pricing here is higher given its location (and absurd rent), but a great drop-in to get your hands on some pipes and talk with people who know the trade.
In Salem, I am at a loss.
AVVA Cigars & Tobacco is a small corner-location in a mall (a real mall, not a strip-mall) When I was there last, they carried about 8 jars of bulk, and a few tins. The gentleman there is friendly enough, but (by his own admission) had not smoked a pipe in 20+ years. There is a reasonable selection of cigars, and a smoking lounge, but again, no pipe smoking inside. Their markup on relabeled bulk Lane was absurd.
It's tragically difficult to find a shop in a pinch, particularly in Salem.
Let me know if anyone has a hidden shop in the area I should know about.

I split my time between France and the UK.
In the UK I'm around 30 mins away from my smoking shop which is a damn good tobacconist, it carries pretty much every blend available in the UK and has a big selection of pipes.
France is different. Smoking is still very popular so bar-tabacs are everywhere, the main street in my village is less than 75 shops and three will sell me tobacco. The problem is selection, buying cigars and cigarettes is easy but finding good pipe tobacco is difficult. It's made worse by a ban on internet sales and even posting tobacco risks a €10000 fine.
