I am not sure Mellersh served as a pilot in WWII as he would have been in his early 40's and a senior officer in the RAF. He was a WWI ace.
According to the data, it appears Francis, WWI Francis, named his son Francis. That picture is supposedly of the son.

And of course the many American and Canadian airmen who flew day time raids over cities surrounded with anti-aircraft fire. I can't help but wonder how I, or my friends, would have coped with that level of constant fear and stress. No wonder pipes were popular!
