Odd that it looks to have shape number stamped under the Peterson’s (over) System, usually there’s only a 0-3 grade number there-I thought it had just a 1 there on first glance, which would be normal.
That and the “two shield” K P on the silver ferrule makes it interesting for sure!

(edit) i’ll be interested to hear more about it from someone that knows such things…

Definitely Pre-Republic, the stamping is all there. No 0-3 means closer to the Republic, but that just more educated guess than fact.

Unless it's to smooth out a burnt rim, I find sanding a pipe pretty pointless. A soft brush, a little dish soap, water, and a heat gun handy to dry it out can bring a pipe back to the natural briar color without erasing the markings. In this case, it was only a superficial cleaning, choosing to preserve the rim's flaws.
