Chasingembers, while most pipes given the XL designation originated in the SH line, not all. Take the XL 03 for instance. Must be getting dottering in my older age as I completely forgot I had an XL 14 until I saw the photo. though mine is the Deerstalker from the SH line. Yeah, it's a larger pipe but certainly not magnum size such as the house pipes.

I didn't find my aran to be huge and the difference doesn't seem that great but i don't know, I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination!

I have an XL Dublin shape, 3/4 bent. The proportions on mine are very close to that of an Oom Paul. It's tall, thick, and smokes the whole evening away.

By other maker sizes, the Peterson XL pipes aren't exceptionally oversized.
From my collection

9BC - 70 (Premiere Selection) & 67 (Kapruf)

XL90 - 74 grams

69 - 43 grams

X69 - 61 grams

999 (Pre-Republic)- 54 & 60 grams

XL999 - 51 grams
I didn't know that Jim Lilly had passed. I don't often check in the International Peterson Collectors forum, but today I didn't see any mention of that. Sad that it happened and sad that his board didn't recognize that event. A raised pipe to Jim Lilly.
House pipes are a different story, they are huge. I'm not a big pipe guy, but thought about buying this unsmoked pipe just to keep.

I found out in a thread about Randy Wiley pipes, that when we all discuss the sizes of pipes that we all have different versions of what "big" is, probably due to how we relate to our pipes. I could say that I've never seen a small Randy Wiley Pipe and half a dozen guys would say that there are a lot of pipes larger than his. A lot of guys would agree with me. And, some would say that Randy Wiley pipes are the smallest in their collections ...the theory of relativity.
Also, looking at the numbers doesn't help. I have a 6" long 2.5" tall long and lanky Hilson dublin that is one of the smallest pipes I own. I also have an Ardor bent bulldog that is 6" long and 2.5" tall, but hangs below my chin and is the absolute largest pipe I own.
Pictures don't help me much, unless there is something to compare it to in the picture as well. Or a grid, like CupoJoes uses. This is why IO posted that picture in the first comment. The blog had said that the pipe was a Peterson XL. Comparatively, it is about the largest Pete I've seen.

@ scrooge - right, I'd forgotten the gems he has listed!
To me, weight is everything and I need to see the weight in grams (or ounces). I know if it is beyond 60 grams, the pipe is not likely for me. I usually photograph all of my pipes against a ruler, for at least some size perspective. But, many online retailers (ebay, etc.) do neither.
