Peterson Waterford?

I bought one pipe from ...... and that makes me think all of them are garbage.

I don’t think all Peterson pipes are garbage. I didn’t state that.
I have a recently made production pipe from Peterson, that arrived with significant issues which should have been picked up by anyone looking if there had been anything approximating a QC program. I own five, and have refurbished or worked on thirty or so. I have Peterson pipes which are wonderful smokers. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues in QC.

Pat, no doubt QC can be an issue, but that's never the point of most of the anti-Peterson crowd.
I'll give an example. I own a pair of Sanuk Flip Flops that blew out after wearing them for two weeks. I called the customer support, explained the problem and was sent a new pair. Was it a pain in the ass....kinda...was it the end of the world....no. Do I still buy Sanuk shoes....absolutely.
I'm not singling you out, but everytime a Peterson pipe thread comes up someone comments about a pipe they bought that they had QC issues with.

Oh well, the day is new. It's time to enjoy some 20 year old Virgina Woods in a Patent Peterson.

An objective analysis of a pipe brand's QC would estimate the "flaw rate" vs. other factory pipes. All we ever hear are individual anecdotes. Am of the opinion we hear these anecdotes as often as we do because they pump out 70,000 pipes per year. There are no such objective appraisals out there to know for sure that Pete screws up more than any other brand.
I like to think I am pro-Peterson. I mean, I'm Irish and love the history of the brand. And it's true that all the reports on QC issues are mere anecdotes, but so is 99.99% of the other bullshit on a forum like this; that's what forums are -- a collection of anecdotes.

I am visually drawn to many of the Peterson pipes and I love that they have such strong ties to a region. But I've been so disappointed with the stain used on their St. Patrick's Day pipes and the Racing Green line. The three such pipes that I own went from beautiful green to greenish yellow after just holding and smoking the pipes a few times.
Drilling, draw, etc. were fine on them though.

litup, I'll share anecdotal evidence. :wink: yeah, Pete pipes stained green have a tendency to do that. Pete pipes stained blue have had problems in the past at times with the finish going bad on them. But, I'm just a brown or black, (if blasted or rusticated-don't like ebony smooth finishes), kind of guy.

If I get a bad one, I am sending it to ashdigger. He has given me a full warranty and indemnity.
Bad question to ask when writing about Petes in front of me. Makes me go rabid. Peck, if you want to try a straight Pete but are nervous about the price, check with me. I have a couple I can do without, simply because I have too many. But Petes make up the majority of my 25-some pipes, and I ordered the Waterford: can't wait to get it. It'll be nice to have a Pete without a band for a change.
I've had a few Peterson's over the years that had some QC issues. The latest one was a Arklow B5 where the stem was not bent correctly. I have picked up a Roundstone 150, a Newgrange 86, a sandblasted red spigot (x105) and this years Christmas pipe (x105) over the past two months and they have been spot on in terms of construction and quality. No issues with the stained bowls imparting a bad taste.
The one constant brand in my 25 years of smoking has been Peterson, from a high of about 100 to the 18 I currently own. I can count on one hand how many of these over the years had bad construction. I agree there is a risk but it is a very slight one. Plus you can always ask questions about the construction before buying the pipe online.
