The first pipe I ever bought was a Savinelli and it was a great pipe that gave me a baseline on how a good pipe should smoke. I had one Peterson that smoked like shit and I dumped it. I had a few Sainelli's over the years and each one was a great smoker. I never bought another Peterson.
I agree with you. My second pipe was a savinelli Roma I bought 18 yrs ago, still have it, and still smokes great! I have probably at least 30 Savinelli’s and every one of them smoke wonderful.

I own both. I really don’t like my Peterson pipes . 1 Is drilled downward and the bottom of the pipe and it gets very hot. The other just gurgles no matter what I do. I don’t smoke them. My savinelli is ok . I do smoke it I just don’t care for the button. I could fix that, I just haven’t. I just found much more comfortable and better smoking pipes and moved on. I should’ve added my Savinelli 104 smokes fantastic. My 804 is uncomfortable.

I'll slide in a good word for French pipes while we're at it. Especially if you find you do well with smaller medium chamber pipes, you can get a good long smoke with flake/coin/plug/rope cuts. The beloved English shapes are mostly from the French, and the French have an elegant touch with traditional designs. Most French pipes are above their price point in quality. I love my Sav's and Petes, but the French give them a run for their money.

I'm of the opinion that Peterson has really tanked over the last few years. I just got one a couple of weeks ago where the stem/shank transition isn't flush and the silverwork was quite sub-par. A few previous Petes I've owned were rock solid smokers and quite well built.

Also, +1 on Stanwell. Under-rated pipes.

Hey guys. I'm new to this forum, though I've been smoking pipes since 2004.

In browsing through these forums, I saw quite a bit of discussion regarding the merits of a Peterson pipe vs. a Savinelli. I'd like to weigh in on this, if I may.

I have several of both brands. (In fact, as I write this, I'm enjoying a bowl of Ashton's Consummate Gentleman in my Savinelli Roma Lucite, 614).) I feel as far as the quality of the smoke, the aesthetics of the pipe, and the overall enjoyment of the whole experience, Petes and Savs are evenly matched. I really can't tell a difference. I suppose, if I was forced to choose, I might lean a bit more toward my Petes. Maybe there's something about the way a Peterson feels in my hand that is just slightly better. But you can't go wrong with either pipe. A Rossi is a good investment as well.

Having said that, I do think that smoking Peterson tobacco in a Peterson pipe, and Savinelli tobacco in a Savinelli pipe is a preferred method. But others might think me a bit too fastidious in this matter.
Although I would like to see Peterson move away from the vulcanite stems...

Welcome to the forum!

You are a professor of what field(s)? Still lecturing? Where?

Smoking only tobaccos with the same name as the pipe seems rather limiting, however nifty.

Enjoy your time here!

You can put your location in your Profile—(please!—because people will forget!) That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc., etc..
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. Just country if you must.

Greetings from the Cayman Islands.

I just bought a Peterson 114EX, and also scored a Stanwell RM (1994 make), as it's my birth year. They are both billiards of different styles. I am thinking about buying a Peterson at some point.

I have several pipes from both firms. Usually decent quality!

Truth be told the basic “factory” pipes in both are inconsistent in quality. (some great, some not). If you pay a little more for a higher grade version there is a consistent jump in quality and smokeability. The Sav Punto oro just seems to be fitted with greater care - no gaps between stem and stummel and lively fine finish. If I want a Sav I now look for Punto or greater quality.

The Christmas pipe from Peterson this year really doesn’t look like they took much care (the one I got from SP had bubbles in the finish - I sent it back) - in stark contrast the Pipe of the Year is beautifully made.

So buy either - but get the best you can afford. Reputable sellers will let you inspect a pipe and return it if it isn’t up to snuff.

Welcome to the forums Sir, in my opinion quality-wise newer Petersons do vary, Savinellis seem to be more stabile in this regards, but as far as Stanwell go,I'd say they are superior, though they usually come with more open draw than Petersons but nothing can(?) beat Dunhill-White Spot, this sucker did set me back for $360 brand new, no I'do not consider buying any more brand new Dunhills at this point,as far as Dunhill prices,it is very likely there might be better, more reasonably priced alternatives out there, especially among artisan makers offerings but when it comes to factory made hand finished pipes somehow I don't see no manufacturer who make classic shapes looking as refined and sophisticated as W S Dunhill

Peterson all the way. They do have some serious issues with stems. But stummel looks great, no issue with drilling, feels good in hand and smokes great.
