That is a great point and any non-silver dated Pete has to be taken with a grain of salt. On the 999, at some point, they started making the shape more slender and less chunky, so that helps. I guess even with hallmarked pipes, the band could have been added or replaced (not as likely, but possible).Interesting note about the pre-republic nomenclature: The stamps do not guarantee the age. I recently restored a hallmarked Pete with pre-republic nomenclature, but the hallmarks dated it to 1973. I doible and triple checked this.
