Interesting note about the pre-republic nomenclature: The stamps do not guarantee the age. I recently restored a hallmarked Pete with pre-republic nomenclature, but the hallmarks dated it to 1973. I doible and triple checked this.
That is a great point and any non-silver dated Pete has to be taken with a grain of salt. On the 999, at some point, they started making the shape more slender and less chunky, so that helps. I guess even with hallmarked pipes, the band could have been added or replaced (not as likely, but possible).
This is why I love old pipes, the mystery and history hidden in the briar.

I'm pre republic dreaming... The recent Irish budget announced 50 million to be spent on the 19 in 16 century commemorations. So that would provide a pre-republic Peterson for every man woman and child on the island of Ireland.

Of course I don't condone a pipe for the pre 16 ,16 year olds.

And to be clear and swipes at irony aside, that is simply a stunning pipe and I wish you many happy times with it. I'm as green, with envy, as the left hand section on the tri colour though.

I'm puffing my 999 in tribute to yours, right now. You did a great job on her and gave her many decades of new life.
