Hey guys, I am hoping for some info from you experienced pipe men - I am looking to purchase a Peterson pipe I really fancy - They come two ways, fishtail and p-lip - Question, what are the differences, does a p-lip take getting used to? Thanks! Jerry

The fish tail should be fine.

But, IMHO one should avoid P-lips.

I personally don't like them.

I tend to chew them up.
However; There are many on here that love them.

So.... My answer is: I could never get used to a P-lip and the difference...

One is comfortable while the other is not.

YMMV.

Jerry, I just got my first P-Lip the other day. It's weird after being used to fishtails, but I like it. In the future if have a choice, I would choose a fishtail over a P-Lip. If I don't have a choice and I like the pipe, I would definitely buy another P-Lip. I don't dislike the P-Lip. That's just me though.

I have some of each, and it makes no difference to me at all. I seldom clench my pipes though. I usually hold them in my hand and go back and forth to my mouth with them.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys - My eye is really fancying a Rosslare bent w/amber fishtail stem - I also like the system pipe w/P-lip - Maybe I'll just have to buy one for each eye! LoL! - Seriously, before laying out 120 bucks - maybe I should look into a p-lip on e-bay - It sounds like everything in our bacca world, to be subjective to personal preference! You guys are helpful, Thanks!

My personal preference is the P-lip. :)
Of my twenty seven pipes nine are P-lips, and are smoked most often.

The P-lip stem is designed to direct the smoke to the roof of your mouth, thereby avoiding tongue bite. They have been popular since the late 1800's and are favored by many pipe smokers. Of course like anything else concerning pipe smoking, it's individual preference, so please try one and give us your views. Another point is that many of the P-lip stems are quite narrow in width which I personally find very comfortable. Just my 2 cents worth

Thanks for taking your time in giving me your thoughts, fellows - I can see passion on behalf of both styles, which only makes me want to try both - NOW the question is do I place an order @ 4 Noggins for one of each (not telling the little lady) and take my lumps later or... I'll place the order!

Hi Marc, - I have 5 pipes with reg stems - besides clenching a bit, they work well for me ( I've never known different) I have always fancied the Peterson pipes, maybe my Irish heritage - just never smoked a p-lip - I am just going to have to have a go at it! -Jerry
