I've never thought of using a magic eraser as a sanding medium before. This is really spectacular work.

Thank you. My strength is in my patience, sense of duty, and obsession with detail. My weakness is that I am slow. I really consider myself a hack at this, which is why working on someone else's baby makes me nervous. It's just a little hobby for me. Fortunately Unkleyoda has been really chill about it all. The only parameter he set with me is to not take an angle grinder to it.
I read somewhere that the Magic Eraser is the equivalent of 5000 grit sandpaper. It works great for removing just tiny amounts of dye to really fine tune the contrast and getting a hard and slick surface. I use it for a lot of things.

In my opinion, yes. i don't know if that would stand up to scientific scrutiny though.

Glad to know it's not just me. No, i have never tried shellac before, how does that work?

Also never apologize for taking time to do things right, the pipe really looks good. That said, we are all ravenous for updated pictures! What kind of green stain are you using?

Ha! No pressure there, Mike. LOL. I got some wax on it last night at about 1:00 AM and it looks pretty good. It's really more sheeny than shiny though so I am going to do a little light buffing and put another application or two on today. Hopefully I finish it up today and get some nice photos taken this afternoon.
I'm using Fiebings leather dye.

Feibings is good stuff - I used it to restore a leather steering wheel once.

Here's some pictures of the final product. These pics were taken in natural light about 6' from a window. In lower light it's darker, sort of emerald color with less contrast.

Though I really liked the high contrast look of the pre-green, I really wanted a green silver spigot. When I got the pipe it was jet black with a peeling clear coat. I stripped what I could with Everclear and hand waxed it. So, from when I got it till now, it looks a million times better.
I have another pipe I would like refinished in the future, I'll probably opt for the high contrast finish.
