I received this pipe in a lot from ebay and I'm curious about the stem. Never had a peterson and it looks to be in really nice shape. could someone please explain whats going on with the stem? Ive never seen this before. what purpose does this serve? Also does anybody have some good advice on a first cleaning of an estate pipe?

That is called a stinger. It's suppose to catch moisture while smoking. That's debatable among smokers. Most kaywoodie pipes have them. Yours is removable, If it were me, I would just toss it in a drawer. Nice pipe.

Your welcome. Thanks for sharing the picture. I didn't know Peterson had pipes with stingers so I learned something also.

Ditto, I've never seen one.
As far as cleaning goes, search salt & alcohol treatment, for the bowl, run some alcohol dipped cleaners through the shank and stem, and it will be good enough to smoke. If it has serious ghosts you may need to set up a retort or use activated charcoal (info about these in other threads as well). And to get that stem looking pretty soak in oxyclean or bleach/water mixture then hit it with magic eraser and wet sand (most people like micro mesh for the wet sanding) then seal it with carnauba wax and obsidian oil.

Yup, that's a stinger. Mine get tossed in a old baccy can, to be saved for some reason I don't know about. There are so many opinions and methods on how to restore an estate, I think it is best if I leave it up to some of the better restorers. Main thing is, welcome to the art of buying estates and restoring them. You will have alot of fun and enjoyment doing it. Be patient, take your time, and ask yourself, "What do I want this to look and smoke like when I am done?"

I have a couple of old Pete's that came with stingers. I have not been able to tell the difference with or without one. I take them out, since you cannot pass a pipe cleaner through with a stinger in place.

As far as cleaning, some Everclear and many pipe cleaners are my usual plan, and a salt/alcohol treatment. Be careful with this, as alcohol will destroy the outside stain of your pipe. If you are concerned about germs and such, there are plenty of reasonably priced professionals out there who can do a really thourough job restoring it for you. Myself, I am good with Everclear and Bristle cleaners, until I can pass a wet cleaner and it comes back clean.
