Aquadoc, yeah lots of blocks simply don't exhibit good enough or regular enough grain to be classified by any of the terms we've used. The hearwood of the burl is almost grainless - smokes just fine, that's what most of the older pipes from last century were cut from, after all. And in between things range from briar that is almost featureless like a smooth cheese to briar that is stripey and uniform all the way through. So as far as I know there's no official classification for poorer grain, but you'll see terms like "washed out" be applied.

I have various series Petersons, such as Around the World, Killarney, Belgique, Shannon, and others. None high-end, but some nice pipes. Through luck, or maybe timing of the purchases during a time when QA was good, I have not had a problem with any of them, and they are all reliable and durable.

George, that spigot is a stunner.
SSjones, loving that XL90! I had never been really attracted to that shape, but thanks to you I'll need to track one down ;) It looks very compact, good for a stroll.
This is my Grafton 01, found it unsmoked on eBay. I haven't been able to make out the hallmarks to date it, but I don't think they started releasing this series that long ago.
This photo was taken while out on a stroll in the outskirts of St. Andrews, Scotland:

Way nicer than my 107, which has a slightly shorter bowl, and not near the grain. Chicago, May 2016, ca. $100. (deep discount as it was originally green, but most of the stain was gone when I bought it, and now is all gone.)
