Some of my 200-dollar Petes are worse than my 100-dollar Stanwells. If they don't sort out their quality issues, then they have nailed their own coffin.

So, the rumor of this increase has been debunked by the company representative here and some continue to berate Peterson? Maybe I am older than I thought' I don't get it....this makes no sense.

I seriously doubt the mere handful of Peterson bashers on this site will adversely impact Peterson's bottom line.
Shawn: Just how bad do your Stanwells smoke? Are Stanwells your standard of poor smoking pipes? Against what brand do you measure good smoking pipes?

warren, he's saying that $200 petes smoke as good as $100 Stanwells, not that the Stanwells don't smoke well :)
I've personally found Stanwell to smoke better, but Peterson certainly has the better classic look and style to my personal taste.

He states: "Some of my 200-dollar Petes are worse than my 100-dollar Stanwells." (The italics are mine.) He omits how well or how bad his Stanwells smoke. And so, begs the question. If his Stanwells smoke bad, the Peterson pipes must be very, very bad. If the Stanwells smoke fair, he's not saying much. If the Stanwells smoke "great", how much worse are the Petes?
The statement he made just begs to be parsed.

I guess it doesn't matter to me. If presented the choice I'd save the hundo and get the Stanwell, but to be fair I now no longer own any of either brand.

it seems mandatory to have a bash Peterson thread at least every other week and in between usually a thread bashing aero's. Of course the active threads would not be complete without the standard threads 'should I use a filter' or the famous 'do you use a rubber bit'
Doc, couldn't have said it better myself.

Warren,
I seriously doubt the mere handful of Peterson bashers on this site will adversely impact Peterson's bottom line.
I respectfully disagree with the above statement. The people on this site do have an influence on Pete's bottom line. I myself can lose Peterson many a sale. People listen to me as I am omnipotent and have the power to ruin Peterson.
Seriously people who do not post but read the threads on this site are numerous. I can point out Italian pipes in every Pete's price range and get a better smoker every time. Quality control at the Peterson factory is really bad, it is no joke.

I am not a Peterson basher just for the sake of bashing them. I have seen with my own eyes too many bad pipes that leave the factory and are forced on retailers who would love to give them back but they risk losing their Peterson account. I can also point out tons of Italian pipes that have no issues such as stems not fitting properly, pipes that are drilled properly, no bowls filled with stain, pipes that whistle and pipes that are wet smokers. I could go on but you get the point. I would guess that 40 percent of the pipes that leave the Peterson factory have at least one of the issues I outlined above.
It is really a shame Peterson quality control is so bad as they make some damn fine looking pipes. I would love to buy a few but because of their issues I don't feel that they should get a dime of my money. I would really like to add a few 14k gold spigots to my collection, I love the looks of those.

(1) As long as they don't increase the price on Mixture 79
(2) I'd like to own a Peterson someday. If it sucks, I'll go back to Rossis. But at some point, when I finally have enough Royal Yacht (NEVER!!!), maybe I'll be able to hook myself up with one. They don't look half bad ;)

In the spirit of the conversation, I just dropped the dime on two more Petersons from Pipe Divan at 20% off.

Doc, say it ain't so. How could you. You are enabling Peterson to continue their lack of quality control. You have forever doomed us to the Peterson's business model. The horror, the horror.

It's a tragic form of loyalty that is rooted in denial. The same reason why around 96% of incumbents are returned to office every congressional election.

So true. Most people who vote are lemmings who have no idea what the issues really are. It should be mandatory that people pass a test before they are allowed to vote.

Couldn't help it 20% off, plus I just love them. While I will agree that the dip stain does suck, I have never really had any major issues with them, besides one that smoked wet for some time before it got nice and broke in. Over the years I have been smoking I bet I have owned around 60-70, new and estate. They remind me of the Mack truck of pipes, they just never go bad. I have had more issues with Savinelli.

60 to 70 Petes, that is beyond normal, you must be a worshiper of Lucifer, only he could get you to buy so many. I feel sorry for you, being possessed is no fun unless you are possessed by Rad Davis, that is a good possession.

Just a little addition, at this is an observation at the $100 Peterson Pipes ($100 in my currency translates to 6900-7100 so its not a small amount by any means. you cna buy a Lenovo A6000 cellphone with it).
The 2014 Peterson Christmas pipes were VERY well built, no problems at all. Infact it is my best English blend pipe (a B35 Zulu, love the stem).
Fast forward to 2015 Christmas Pipes, the stem, not only it isn't flush with the shank, it leans towards the left more making my OCD horrible. The drilling in the 999 I got is a tad high which wastes tobacco in the chamber, but the bowl it seems has been bruised by the drill that it reaches to the middle of the bowl.
Even a middle-class person earning minimum wage in the US will have to sacrifice around 10 hrs of their life to get a pipe from the same price range excluding the $10 shipping from the retailer.
Just my 2 bits.
Chris :puffpipe:

Good comments Chris, but just a clarification on that one point. People earning minimum wage in the U.S. are definitely not middle-class. They are the working poor. Many, if not most of them, are on food stamps and/or other government assistance of some kind...or living with parents, or roommates, or whatever. But you cannot get by on min wage and even come close to being able to cover the most basic life expenses.
Blue-collar, middle-class jobs with decent pay have been "offshored" to overseas slave factories. In addition to government assistance, the illusion of the middle-class in the U.S. is also perpetuated by dirt-cheap slave goods for sale at China Mart Wal Mart and dirt-cheap processed substances that people ingest and call food.
