Peterson Price Increase

The politician screws with my lifestyle and takes my moneys at the point of a gun with the threat of jail time should I refuse him/her a share of my coin. I can choose which businessman gets my moneys, if any. I can only punish a politician with my, rather insignificant, vote and he/she still takes my moneys.

However, consider government as a property. People say things, and the popular ones get votes, which enables a business to rule over that property, and gain its monopoly on force and legislation (roughly: liability).

I recall years ago that someone on a football forum posted they saw "so and so" in the airport of their home team during free agency signing. Before long the rumor had gotten so big that one of the big sport news outlets did a story on it. Sorry I can't give more details, I'm old and my memory isn't what it used to be. But you get the gist.
Good thing this rumor didn't have those legs.

Why? Read the OP. It was not posted as a "rumor." So, rather than questioning the report, accepted it on face value. Most of the first few posts bought into the post and/or used it as a starting point for bashing the Peterson. Mostly the later.
People love rumors which meet expectations.

I will say this thread compelled me to purchase a Pete Deluxe Canadian with silver band. Figured it woudl not get any cheaper.

I found a filling in a $200 Pete recently. Didn't spot it when the pipe was new. They can't be trusted. But is IS a good smoke.

And again! Can't be trusted? Peterson discusses briarwood defects and fills openly on the website. They offer a reasonable guarantee as to workmanship and other faults. What exactly can they not be trusted about, as you so cavalierly offer.
edit: This stuff always gets me going a bit as I totally do not understand it. Should they leave the voids and other defects alone and perhaps enclose a tube of wood paste in the box?? I certainly would not expect a pipe in the range of $200.00 to be defect free.

Warren, it seems mandatory to have a bash Peterson thread at least every other week and in between usually a thread bashing aero's. Of course the active threads would not be complete without the standard threads 'should I use a filter' or the famous 'do you use a rubber bit'

Here we go. Raising a question about fills in $200 pipes, that should open Pandora's Box for sure. But in this area I have to agree. Peterson makes no claim of "fill free" pipes but does their best to make them less obvious not as a deception but as a matter of attractiveness.

I somewhat understand that some feel better bashing something. It's the baseless statements I do not understand. "They can't be trusted." In what way? One simply shouldn't make a statement like that without citing specific instances of fraud. Not understanding the "sump" or poor production are valid claims. But, out and out dishonesty? Fraud? That's a fairly serious charge to make. I'd like to see some citations. If they lied and cost you moneys, sue them, win and then make a statement you can properly support.
Of course behavior is not restricted to Peterson. I see it time and again on the site, whether it's retailers, carvers, etc. I guess it's the anonymity that encourages such base behavior. More erosion of common decency I suppose and to be expected.

Then you have the thread where folks insist that a $10 cob smoke every bit as good and better than any briar. I think they are actually trying to convince themselves. You know like the guys that insist size doesn't matter

If Foggy don't spot it when the pipe was new I'm guessing it must have been damn small.. But if Foggy has declared it a good smoker with his stack of Dunhills at 3x+ the price most of us would be thrilled with it.

Ok, we have a member here who has preferred status and has been here over 3 years. He goes into his tobacconists and is told of the 50%n increase. Why should he doubt his retailer, should he have called him a liar to his face? He believed what the guy told him and he shared it here for his fellow pipe brothers.
Should the abuse he has been getting be justified? He did not make this up out of thin air. I believe he is owed an apology.

Now let us find out what is real and what isn't. Does anyone have an in at the Peterson factory. Rich from 4noggins is calling bullshit on the price increase.
Rich is there anyway you can get someone at the factory to state there is no increase, or were you told there is no increase from your distributor? I would like to find out unequivocally that Peterson is either raising prices or not, lets's not jump on the OP just because he was told something from a retailer.

I prefer to chalk it up as a rumor and carry on. If I was concerned, I would email Peterson and ask them to confirm or deny. As it is none of my business, I suspect I would receive a return message which danced around the question while thanking me for my interest.
My initial response to the clerk or manager, or owner, or whatever would have been, "Where did you hear of that?"
If my broker told me "X company" was going to split I'd ask to see his information and figures. Basing actions on what you her can be fraught with peril. Very similar to a clerk telling me that he was running low and .45 Federal and it would be long time before he had more. The owner, upon query, corrected him and allayed my fears.

In the past many people have emailed Peterson's head-honcho Tom "Dipstain" Palmer and he has responded back....it wouldn't hurt to try. Personally I really don't care about the price increase but for those that do...try shooting him an email.

If my post came across as jumping on the OP I am very sorry. Speaking for myself I have purchased many an item because of something I was told, I mean they are supposed to be the experts right? Nothing against the OP at all, at least from me, and once again sorry if it came across that way. I will eat a flake of Latakia if the rumor is true and that will help.

No point in wasting money on Peterson after the price hike. Ebay is a better source for better Peterson pipes.

They're fine $60 pipes. They're pushing it at $100. Beyond that is strange to me. Other factory pipes smoke better in my experience.
They have a great brand, their pipes look like the pipes everyone thinks of when they think pipe whether they smoke or not, they're the only Irish pipe company which holds weight with a lot of people. But they aren't $100+ pipes in my mind. I've smoked mmany Petes - expensive and less expensive - and outside of different stem material on the cheapest it's all pretty much the same. Might have better grain, might have worse grain, all had the dip stain, many drilled weirdly.
It's a shame. I'd truly like to like them. I think I'm done trying to convince myself I ever will.
This isn't the only brand I feel this way about, but in the case of the other brand that jumps to top of mind, I recently let myself acquire a very old one so it would be silly to come out and admit it. Plus foggy is here and he looks like you don't want to be on his bad side.
Let's just say I enjoy my Upshall and my Ashton very much, but Italian pipes may have ruined me.
