More than 35 years smoking a pipe, and I thought I knew most of things.
Then I see this, something I didn't know existed. That oval bowl, two drafts -- just nifty as hell.
(Now I want one.)

Dunhill has made this shape in the past and called it an "opera pipe"... to fit neatly in a tuxedo breast pocket.

This may sound quite silly but my initial thoughts once I couldn’t find any information on the pipe was, maybe it’s an early R&D pipe that Peterson was working on when they were trying to develop their system pipe design.... It’s a far cry I know. I will see if I can’t also identify the stem material to get a better idea of the date which may clear up some of the questions I have about the timeframe the pipe could have been made in.

I'll check with Mark Irwin, if anyone knows, it will be him.

I haven't seen such a Peterson before.
Peterson made an Opera pipe, this one from 1914, with all the traditional Peterson nomenclature.

Mark Irwin always come through! His reply was:
It is made by Peterson’s Ltd. of NY, and you’re right, it’s what is known as an “opera” pipe. Dates from the early 1960s. We tell the Peterson’s of NY story in the book. They were “related” in very vague ways to Peterson of Dublin through an interesting business alliances with Peterson of Dublin’s US importer. More about them in the book!
The only thing to pop up in a google search for Peterson's LTD of NY is this old matchbook:

What a LEGEND! Thanks again ssjones for the detective. I just purchased the matchbook to go along with my pipe, seeing as how its rather unique and i take it that the pipe itself is on the rarer side of the spectrum. i came across another old thread from 2012 where a fellow posted upward of 20 pages from an old Peterson LTD Tobacconist catalog but unfortunately the pics were no longer accessible. I think I'm going to have the pipe restored and/or refurbished, then add it into my rotation.

1916 Peterson Opera pipe, before clean up (yes! I know the stem is on upside-down).

This one has the standard single draft hole.

Here’s a Dunhill Opera pipe that I found on eBay. Any ideas on how to date it? Pipedia gave me some info but it seems to run me in circles.
