im hearing alot of mixed reviews. im sure they are good pipes, but to make my list it has to be a little more consistent. 50% of the people have problems it seems, the others dont. Anyway, im just gonna keep looking. nothing against the pipes.

My only Peterson system pipe gurgled more than any pipe I have, until I learned to slow down drastically. Even then it will gurgle occasionally.

I would suggest if you want to try an P-lip, find a decent example on Ebay before going in on a new pipe, in that price range. All of my P-lip stems are vulcanite, that is a difference maker for me. On new Petes, often the Fishtale stem is acrylic.

There's probably no such thing as a perfect pipe. And if you find one, there's every chance you'll change your mind about it.
But really, the smoker matters more than the pipe. I have a Peterson System with a P-lip, plus other Peterson's (bent and straight) with fishtail bits. They all smoke great for me, but in different ways. The bent Systems with the P-lip are some of the best jaw-hangers ever made. Since you're not looking at Peterson anymore, I guess it's a moot point, but no matter what brand you're looking at, the most important factor is your own technique.

I've had a disappointing experience with Peterson and most probably will not buy another again which is a shame as they make a good looking pipe at a good price point.
I had an outdoor series D6, a bent dublin where the mouth piece was so bent it had closed the airway to the point it wouldn't pass the thinnest of pipe cleaners.
I have a '78 sterling 80s bulldog where the air hole is at least 1/4" high, a bit of pipe mud solved the problem.
I have a second 80s bulldog and it was my first pipe, it'll not pass a pipe cleaner but it doesn't gurgle so who cares? It's a pretty good smoker

My 2 cents:

For new pipes at the same price point Savinelli makes a much better smoker.
My older plip smokes well.

I have a great explorer series shackleton. It's a very handsome looking pipe, and I got it brand new for 65$ canadian when I dropped into a tobacconist shop that was closing down in Calgary. The store owners mother was there and was one of the most persistent sales woman I've ever encountered. When she told her son she was going to sell me that pipe for 50$ his head sunk, I felt bad for him, so when he said can you do 65$ I was like sure, it's a 250$ pipe. The draw is a bit restricted though and it whistles, so I think I may open up the draft hole. I'd of been dissapointed if I'd paid 250$ for it.

I have 3 petersons. All of them had some kind of small problem, e.g. once the silver band fell off and I stick it back with glue. However, they have all been excellent smokers and I find them performing better than other pipes of the same price that I have. In particular, I haven't managed to find anything to match the smoking qualities of a peterson Darwin that I have.

I am considering to buy another for Christmas :)

I bought my only Peterson, an estate, a few months ago. It's a system 314 with a p-lip and I love it. If I had to pick only one of my pipes to smoke forever I'd pick the Pete. Though, I would probably advise against the p-lip. I hated it at first and looked into a replacement stem, but by the time I'd done my research I started getting used to it, and now I don't mind it at all. Don't really prefer it, just don't really notice a difference anymore. I suppose that it is nice as a change of pace in that it'll give my tongue a little bit of a rest if it needs it. But I don't see a big enough advantage to it to warrant having to get used to it. It's an excellent clencher and the system works flawlessly for me. Never need a pipe cleaner until I'm done and ready to clean it. I think that 317 is made to be exactly what you're looking for if you don't mind a shorter smoke. If you want something a little bigger the 303 or a 314 would be the ticket.
Let us know what you end up settling on - and how it works out. Funny you say you're looking for the perfect pipe because I was doing the same thing, getting obsessed with one design after another until I found and bought the one that I thought would be just right, and it wasn't quite right, and I moved on to something else. But since I got my 314, I haven't been able to find a good reason to buy another pipe. Not that it's stopped me.

I own a 160 Silver Mounted Army. Smokes great and looks better.

I also own a 313 system premier which I got recently. I love it.
Cheers,
J
