I started off straight out-the-gate with Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding and Wild Man as a noobie piper. I can't recall a time or place where restricting someone's viewpoint is the best way to get someone who's interested, started into this lifestyle/hobby, as a reference of good advice.

Anyhow, my preferences were not for the English (being American myself ;)), however, Peterson's Old Dublin had its way of creeping into a bowl or two over time. I had more recently given 965 a go and to my surprise, it is a very enjoyable smoke indeed. One that I have added to the rotation and cellar.

While I have no English blend recommendations for you, if you want to start to venture out a bit into the lands of VA and not lose the Latakia entirely, I would highly recommend GL Pease's Laurel Heights. It's predominantly a red VA base with a whisper of Latakia and is absolutely delicious when sipped low and slow. I find there enough Lat to be effective and noticeable (slight smoky, woodiness) though perhaps for the diehards, it will be amiss.

965 has long been considered one of the premier smokes around. When it was made by Dunhill and had a Royal Warrant on it I thought it was magnificent. The people who advised you against this blend were steering you wrong. What they should have said was start you pipe smoking journey with a mild English. Aro's and Virginia require a little time to adjust to because they smoke hotter than English blends.

Exactly this!

I do LIKE Virginia's - I bought a tin of Samuel Gawiths ' Golden Glow' after my 5g sample (see above) was used. But I do find it 'bites' a bit and, therefore, isn't exactly the most appealing smoke, despite its wonderful flavour.

If you want to explore the range of how an English blend can taste, I'd recommend picking up some of the following, they're all going to be quite different from one another, and you may not like all of them, but if you tell us which ones you like more and what you like about them, that will help with other recommendations:

ā€¢ Peterson Early Morning Pipe (lighter, campfire taste)
ā€¢ Sutliff Match BS759 and Match BSOM (bulks, easy enough to toss 1oz each in while ordering other stuff; 759 is going to be muskier and more leathery tasting while BSOM is going to be smoother, lighter with a little more sour and incense than 759 match)
ā€¢ Arango Balkan Supreme (another bulk, very light, a bit of the creamy side of spice/incense)
ā€¢ Sutliff Crumble Kake English #1 (very leathery tasting)
ā€¢ Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding Special Reserve (go for the flake version if you don't want to deal with a plug cut; this one is fairly sweet compared to the others)
ā€¢ G.L. Pease Quiet Nights (smooth, thick, musky leather, the "big tiddy goth girlfriend" of English, personal favorite)

Whatā€™s the main difference between PP Special Reserve that puts it ahead of the others?

I donā€™t think I was clear. I meant what about PP Special Reserve makes you recommend it over the other versions of PP?
Because it's more different from the other things I recommended than the regular version is (Special Reserve is sweeter than the regular version, further accentuating the difference between the Plum Puddings and other English blends), and I haven't tried the bourbon barrel aged version. Also, the Special Reserve, as far as I know/remember, is the only one of the three alternatively available in flake cut if you don't want to deal with plugs.

I love 965. I need to learn more about the different types. I wasnā€™t aware that this was considered a Scottish blend. Fwiw, I havenā€™t had a Peterson that I donā€™t like, but there are several that I still need to try. I love Nightcap, Balkans Delight, EMP and Sweet Kellarney And Navy Rolls. I have some Royal Yacht, but Iā€™ve only had one bowl so far. Iā€™ll smoke another today. Research and shall learning continue!

TBF, it isn't sold as a Scottish blend...at least a 'Scottish' in the true sense, but a kind of marriage of English & Scottish styles. Either way, it's a wonderful blend...possibly my current favourite šŸ˜‹20231017_133250.jpg

My revelation into English blends was G.L. Pease Gaslight.
Quiet Nights is similar but Gaslight is a tad more complex (more orientals).
Speaking of which, Presbyterian might still be one of the best Oriental forward blends on the market, it's much more subtle than your average English blend but relatively unique.

I tell ya, you Americans make me envious. That many blends quite easily accessible to you guys AND at great pricing (compared to the U.K. šŸ˜”).

I've seen so many different blends, e.g. Plum Pudding, which sounds gorgeous on YouTube videos, vlogs, blogs etc.,...yet not readily, or easily at least, sourced here in England šŸ˜¢

Uno Reverse:

I've heard you can call and get a full uncut plug of any flake made by Gawith Hoggarth or Samuel Gawith.
Tobacco like that does not exist anywhere else in the world.

Also SG Skiff is one of my top favorite Latakia blends:

This had been on my radar for a while when I finally ordered an 8oz bag. I was a little nervous rolling the dice on such a big amount without tins for resale if I didn't like it. But I was worried for nothing.

The Scottish blend comments sucked me in. I like Mac Baren Scottish Blend - lol, I didnā€™t like this at all. Worth a try and got the tins on sale no no big deal.
