Well, being the noob that I am, I was advised to avoid English blends when I began my journey down the smoking pipe route about 2 and a half months ago. Probably a little 'strong' for my palette apparently, which may have been a fair appraisal.

But having learnt so much over the last 6 or so weeks I was intrigued by what I'd read/seen regarding certain English blends and decided to take the plunge & try a 10g sample pack of Petersons My Mixture 965. First bowl last night...

...all I can say is WOW! 🥰:sher:

This is one lovely smoke - thus, I wanted to enquire here if any fellow fans of 965 could recommend any other similar English blends that might be worth me trying?

Thanks in advance chaps.

965 is what is often referred to as a "Scottish" blend, because it has unflavored cavendish in it. I think that Rattray's was a pioneer in that technique, and they were a Scottish house.
I am not, personally, a fan of 965 - I much prefer Standard - but many folks are, Enjoy.

Thanks for the info - IIRC, my tobacconist did describe it as a cross between an 'English' and 'Scottish' blend without being specifically either.

Les Young introduced me to MM965 about 10 years ago, it immediately became my daily blend.
I've never found anything to replace it.
I never smoked the original, but Les gifted me a tin this summer, that I'll save for a special occasion.
I attribute its uniqueness to the brown cavendish, not seen in many other English blends.
Ever try Sutliff Match 20 to see how it compares? I have both and I think I like Match 20 better.

Sutliff Match 759 is quite good as well but not at all similar to MM965. I'm smoking on a tin of Peterson MM965 now and really enjoying it after not being a big fan of 965 in general for a bunch of years. Standard Mixture has been a long favorite and daily smoke in years past under the Dunhill brand. The new stuff is good too.

In general I disagree with telling new smokers to avoid English blends. Tastes are different, might find out that is your thing right off.

Ol Limey Bastard is supposed to be reminiscent of an older version and having only smoked it and the current Peterson version I can say that I prefer OL Limey YMMV

Thanks! Will they ship if I do a phone order? It looked like there was no way to order online from their site.

Hmm I've always picked up a pound of those two in the store, maybe give em call I guess I never thought to ask, they are pretty small but they got the goods for sure.

965 is a fine blend. Just mellow enough to not offend anyone, but with enough Lat to satisfy that itch.

I don't know why some people caution new people against Lat. Beginners rarely notice the proper pipe blend notes. Latakia is one that kinda opens their eyes to the great world of pipe tobacco. Of course, Lat is either love or hate kinda thing so those warnings must be coming from Lat haters.

965 is a benchmark blend and a fine one. What else to explore if you like that? Dozens of Latakia blends. Depends on what you liked about 965. For some, it can be a bit sweeter than other lats.

So you like sweet? Bitter? Sour? Campfire? Those preferences will lead you to some other blends.

This is a good point. I haven't tried 965 myself, so I don't know what kind of flavor profile it has. But to add to the list of stereotypical English blend flavor notes: musk, leather, incense, spice, savory.

Thanks...I'd say I'm more of a campfire with a hint of sweetness & spice.

I've just ordered a full tin of 965 plus, as suggested above, a sample of Standard Mixture and, in addition, a sample of Charatan No.10 Mixture. Looking forward to expanding my palettes horizons 😋

Couldn't agree more.
Latakia is easily detectable in a blend, smokes cool, tastes non-cigaretty, and as you say, opens up to the world of pipe tobacco. My first non-aro as a newbie was Old Dublin and it was sort of a revelation.

Funny you should mention 'Old Dublin'. I got a sample of this in a sampler pack (of 8 best sellers from my local-ish tobacco specialist about 40mins from me) that I got when I first started.

I honestly didn't really take to it - it was tolerable IYKWIM but not much more.

Yet now I really think it might be more 'up my street' so will deffo dabble again when I next pop into the store. Odd how ones palette can evolve in a fairly short period 🤔😎
