Peterson Model Numbering

I’m looking at getting a Peterson Standard System 31 (bent) but I can’t seem to match it with anything of that number on the various Peterson sites. The numbers used seem to have 3 digits.

Is this because the third digit relates to a sub style? For example is a 317 a 31 and the 7 relates to a more specific pipe within the 31s? If so, what please? Any advice for a novice appreciated.

First up, great choice of pipe.

I thought the 31 was a straight system pipe, with a similar chamber size to the 317 (which from memory is the smallest of the system pipes?).

The differences between 314, 312, 317 etc are all to do with the shapes.

These shapes will stay the same, but have a different model number if you move up to the deluxe grade.

Is this a new pipe, or an estate pipe? If it’s an estate, it’s not uncommon for numbers and letters to be polished off over the years.

Thanks guys. Yes I’d been told straight only too and had seen that link. Here’s the photo of what I’m loooking at. A 3rd digit doesn’t seem to be missing…

Do you have a photo of the other side of the pipe? That is usually where the model number is stamped on a Peterson.

The fact that it is bent means it’s either a 317,314, or 312.

Looks like a 314 to me, but what do I know. Maybe the 4 wasn't stamped.

I see the stamping next to the Standard on your first two photos and the number is after the Standard.

It does look like there is another faint mark next to the 1 and I think it is a 4, making it a 314 medium bent billiard

I've asked the guy selling it but he's not got back yet. Maybe it's a big holiday or some thing ;-)

The photos aren’t the OP’s fault, but I see the faintest of vertical strike just to the right and am pretty sure it’s a 314.

Not so much that you couldn’t probably find another in time. Just a matter of whether you want a bent stem.

I have a 2021 Halloween 314 and a Deluxe 20s and they are both excellent pipes. I second Hawkeye - buy it!

Just heard from the seller and sure enough, the "4" is slightly out of shot and it is a 314. - good work!
