Gentlemen,
My first Peterson Pipe has arrived! Been in the mail since December 9th. You’d think it came from Ireland instead of Florida.

It’s an Aran 06 Bandless Billiard.

Display case? Oh, no no

You live inside of this dark can of Granger... along with two basket cases.

I’ll smoke it tomorrow and will comment. I’ve never owned any name brand pipes. Always hand selected baskets, four Grabows and Cobs.

It’s a modest example. $88

I've had good luck with my mid-level Petersons, despite some quality control issues reported some years ago. That's a handsome pipe, should last for many decades.

Thanks MSO,
It passes a pipe cleaner to the bowl easily. ( my sole criteria) for my billiards.

It whistles! Not kidding! The way the Peterson’s draft hole was cut, the pipe is a whistle!

It’s a hoot! I washed it thoroughly and to my surprise, I’m walking around the house blowing an $88 whistle.

It’s a good looking Pipe. Was reading another post where a new Peterson’s bowl was stained. This one has a textured black coating.

The coating on my last one came off with hot water and paper towel. Underneath was the drop of stain. It wasn’t an Aran though. Summertime 2019.

That looks quite nice. The looks of the Peterson’s always get me. They do chunky shapes better than the Italians, I think.

I am reading PipeIT Nov 23, 2020 Post about Peterson’s “new” Black Textured Bowl Coating defined by Peterson as a WAX MIXTURE OF GUM ARABIC, CHARCOAL AND WATER.

I’m on the fence about removing it, but think ? I’ve decided to build a cake in this pipe. Why not? It’ll be a good comparison to the water flush I now use immediately after smoking my other pipes.

For the Pete, it’ll be a tightly twisted dry paper towel and pipe cleaners after each smoke and I’ll see if she forms a nice smooth cake.

If the Pete doesn’t smell or smoke as fresh as my other pipes, I can simply remove the coating and water flush.

I've always wanted a rusticated 106 with dark stain, silver band, and military bit. There really is something fun about the shape of a chunky Pete billiard, it looks like a balloon animal.

Ok. Here’s the verdict on my first bowl in my Peterson.

Mechanically: A sure fire winner. Smoked easily. One hour from top to bottom. 10:20am to 11:20am on the nose. Perfect one hour bowl size. Easy draw. Few relights. Couldn’t be happier.

Taste: I didn’t get any off putting flavor from the Peterson or by extension it’s textured coating.

Tobacco Flavor: Wasn’t as rich and enjoyable a smoke as are my broken in briars. That’s understandable.

Cleaning; Papertowell removed more than just tobacco. I gave up on trying to remove a white paper towel and this pipe, like my others, will get a water flush as soon as I get home. I don’t want the coating. I want a clean bowl.

Pipe Cleaner/Moisture: No gurgle. I didn’t expect so. I smoke a dry pipe, two gentle puffs, chew the smoke on the 3rd and slowly retro nose and mouth. Sip coffee. Repeat. However, as is my practice, at mid bowl I run a pipe cleaner, dump ash layer and refresh. My pipe cleaner tip was blackened. This is I assume is the Peterson coating. I always get a golden brown resin on my pipe cleaner mid bowl.

Tobacco smoked: The only the blend this pipe will ever see. GRANGER

AFTER FIRST WATER FLUSH AT HOME...

It took many tightly twisted paper towels to finally get one to come out clean/white.

The black textured coating came off easily, but there was also a lot of red stain from the bowls interior hidden beneath. Later paper towels were red with stain.

Eventually I was satisfied. But Peterson can keep their coating. This pipe always will be rinsed clean.

I will certainly report if I observe discoloration of the exterior. I will not baby this pipe. It’s a smoker. But it presents an honest test of water flushing.

Overall: I’m very satisfied with this moderately priced Peterson. At $88 it was money well spent and I will likely purchase more form Peterson.
