Another whinge....

I am new to pipe smoking. Maybe I have just been lucky so far but this post goes alongside my moan about Peterson De Luxe Navy Rolls.

In the last package i ordered I went for DLNY along with Peterson Killarney.

It kind of tastes like when you got to a coffee shop and order a latte with the caramel flavouring but instead you get a pang of guilt and go for the sugar free caramel flavouring option only to realise it tastes weird and a bit disgusting...

That's what it reminds me of. I'm just hoping it will get a bit better once the tobacco had dried a touch.

Everything ive tried so far has been lovely...this latest order seems to have been a huge fail though....

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with that blend. That just goes to illustrate the saying we use around here, YMMV, your mileage may vary.

I say that because I am not generally a VaPer smoker, sticking mostly to English's and Burley blends, but when it's time to reach for a VaPer, DeLuxe Navy Rolls is one of my absolute favorites.

*** Like most tobaccos, and even more so with Virginia blends, I do find that the blend acts and tastes better after a bit of drying and prep prior to smoking.***

Just to clarify...this is a moan about Peterson Killarney....not DLNY. I read it back and it and that wasnt specified enough...haha
Some people like beets, lol. Go figure. All a matter of taste for sure.

I recently enjoyed some Sweet Killarney for the first time while having the maiden voyage with my Peterson Phoenix. All went well!

Yeah, Peterson aros are hit or miss for me. Irish Oak (Cask) and Connoisseur's Choice I enjoy. I was unimpressed by both Sweet Killarney and Sunset Breeze, and traded them away for different stuff. It's all just part of the experience, and yes, for the umpteenth time, YMMV. I find Mac Baren's aromatics are consistently better overall than Peterson's.

That's why I have a chuckle whenever someone asks for recommendation for tobacco blends or pipes in a general way.

So much choice, and unless the question is couched in specifics, who knows what your tastes are. We probably don't, until we explore them.

Just from personal experience - when I returned to pipes a few years ago, I diligently read reviews of tobaccos on different sites, and bought ones that were well-rated that I thought I'd like. A couple were absolutely not to my liking - I couldn't finish smoking a bowl of either. Gave them to a friend, who loves them.

There are a few reviewers whose palate I trust. But I don't follow all their recommendations slavishly.

Find genres or blends you like and branch from those. Most importantly, trust your own palate. And forget the nay-Sayers. eg Mixture 79 gets denigrated a lot. I thought I'd try it to see what the fuss was all about. I like it !
