I like to hear that this tobac (irish oak) ages well.I plan to purchase two tins each time, one to smoke and one to sit back for aging. i like the sugar crystals that form from the aging process.

I'm smoking some Irish Oak I jarred back in early August and am enjoying it more now than I did the first few bowls. Think for those who didn't experience love at first "bite" - try some that has a little age and see what you think.

I love Irish Oak, but can only do half-bowls as I'm such a Vitamin-N lightweight. Great VaPer flavor, though.

I tried this blend early in my pipe smoking and thought it was horrible. Because I'm cheap, I didn't through it away, but put it in a jar and left it on my shelf (maybe to give to someone else later...). After a year and a half with a moistener in there too I tried it again one day. Age made this blend incredible. It is stupid how much better this blend got with age. I do realize that my tastes might have changed, but this blend was significantly better too.
Put a year on it, then smoke it. It will change you.

I've probably smoked about 20 tins of IO over the past few years. Always looked on it as a replacement for Murray's Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture when it was discontinued. In fact I think IO is better than the last iteration of EM. IO has burley which makes is easier to smoke and rounds things out. Otherwise, they taste remarkably similar.
Always treated IO the same as EM. Let the tin air out a good long while (I put mine in jars and leave the lids open, fluffing out the tangled strands till they're all separate). After being at the right moisture level (not super dry, but drier than I keep most tobaks) and kept in a jar a week or so, it seems to blossom. Aging really helps as well.
A dry, kind of austere smoke with a lot of N power, but mild/medium in taste and simply will not bite. Keep with it. If you don't like fairly high N blends I don't think you'll like IO ultimately.

Glad to see this blend getting some attention. It's in my top-five for VaPer hybrids. I also think it's Peterson's best blend (with University Flake running a close second).
FWIW, Perique's Top Five VaPer Hybrids:
Robert McConnell Scottish Cake

GLP Haddo's Delight

Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake

GLP Cumberland

Irish Oak

*Honorable mention: Mac Baren HH Acadian Perique

Love 'The Oak' bought eight tins of it this week just in case Mac Barren mess with it. If like IO you will also like Irish Spring Flake, albeit the flake has more strength.

I smoked a few bowls of IO in an Aran 106, but I found it to be a rather unusual smoking experience: the smoke tastes very smooth through the mouth but then seems to kick you in the back of the throat, leaving an unpleasant scratchy sensation. Could this be the Perique?

I find the tin aroma very exotic, kind of like vinegar and pepper, and this makes me want to like it.

I’ve now switched to a Kings Cross Featherweight for the smaller bowl, but I’m still struggling to find a reason to keep smoking it.

Love it. Irish Flake, Irish Whiskey and Irish oak are the Holy Trinity of Peterson's tobacco line, IMHO of course. Irish Flake is probably my favorite tobacco, period, but i like each of these 3 on their own as well as blending them together with each other for a different experience. BTW, i do also love Perfect Plug and University Flake, not to leave these out or anything but they just did not start with "Irish" in the name, lol.

Last month I had a fairly substantial order from smokingpipes.com and threw in a can of Irish Oak free. I have not open the tin yet and after hearing the level of vitamin N I may not try this blend since I tend to be a sensitive to a high level of vitamin N.

I am smoking some Irish Oak right now in a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Le Strade Red Spray P-Lip. Love it!
I agree with layinpipe about Irish Oak and Irish Whiskey. I have not tried Irish Flake.

I've had some jarred for about 3 months. Smoking some right now in my Nording rusticated bent billiard. I love the room note and the taste is very nice. The wife even likes it too.
