I have six Petes, all bought about six or eight years ago, two low-end priced, the other mid-range, none high end, all bought online, and none with quality problems. The finishes were fine; no problems with stain in the bowls; drilling good; and all of them are chugging right along. Now I feel I'm just asking for it to order a Pete.

Yes, SPC and I are buds, we’ve had that chat - they’re awesome. I always go there first for anything. But this one was an extraordinary looking pipe. The grain is just unreal. The PAD just kicked into over-boost, I couldn’t stand it. And it looks as good in person as it did under studio lights and a macro lens.

I have 70+ Petes. Most I purchased in the last 3 years new. Others were estates that were smoked and some were estates unsmoked. I can say I've only had one stinker. It gurgles like hell. It smokes fine, but I fight with gurgles. I have had 6 or so that were dip stained. I just clean with alcohol and smoke through it. I have seen and heard people's bad stories. I think some or most are real, but others are 'band wagon pilers' that like to be a 'me too' person or beat a dead horse, regardless of if they have had a bad one or not.
Either way, if you love the pipe, smoke through it, if you're not a fan of it, send it back.

That’s awesome. It’s a beautiful pipe. I really dig the bright contrast stain and the shape, 05, definitely catches the eye.
It’s funny about stock photos. Pipes seldom live up to the image. But I had a tiny pipe come in a few weeks back where the opposite occurred. There was a root mark and a few sandy bits that bugged me a little. Thought I would grin and bear it....Italian pipe, after all. Well, with the pipe in hand I can’t find the flaws and I’m really looking. My takeaway don’t sweat big photos of teeny tiny pipes.

Ahh -- the Dippperstain 05 model. Hell with it, just smoke through the nasty shit, it'll go away after 10-20 smokes.
I stopped buying new Peterson pipes years ago. That's a great looking pipe, dam' shame they ruined it. GM Palmer stated (many years ago) that they stopped dunking their pipes in stain. But yet here we are in 2018 still seeing it. And now they try and cover some of it up with some dooshy pre-carb coating. SMH

What's your point? Most questions, complaints, observations and such have appeared numerous times. Many new folk appear to be averse to research and want immediate answers to questions. Follow the threads you like, respond when you want and ignore anything too repetitious or irritating.
I'm pretty sure repetition is one of the things that makes folk lose interest though.

It just seems that each time I see this thread it has the same comments from the same people over and over and over. That was all my point amounted to. Plus the OP has been a member longer than me so I just assumed surely he has also seen this same thread with the same comments over and over. But I agree. I don’t have to read them. Nor comment on them. I guess I will just stay in the “What Music Are You Listening To” thread where I belong.

Thanks - this was informative, I had just never seen a dipped pipe before. It just seemed really strange to me anyone would stain the chamber.

I've been smoking Peterson pipes for 20 years or so. While it sucks they do the dipstaining the way they do, it has gotten much better. I used to have the original Sherlock Holmes set and the stain was so bad in those that literally after two dozen bowls, I would still taste it. One pipe I smoked 50 times and once you hit the halfway point, all I would taste was the stain. Finally ended up spending hours running alcohol soaked bristle cleaners through them to get rid of the stain.
Now, you just have to smoke a couple bowls and give it a good cleaning and you are good to go. Still sucks and I wish they would get rid of that process but it is what it is. When buying a Peterson you just need to accept they do this and plan accordingly or stay away. I wish they would stop or at least make sure none gets into the bowl or shank but I also expect to have to deal with it when I purchase a new pipe from them.
I've picked up three new Petersons recently and they have smoked good after a smoking a few bowls and running 6 or 8 alcohol soaked cleaners through them. Then I repeat this process and the stain is gone by the end of the second heavy cleaning. After that they are excellent pipes. But none of them have had such a horrible taste like the Sherlock set, I barely even notice the stain while smoking.
Just my two cents.

Guess Peterson pipes aren't good beginner pipes: I can see how someone who's still developing a palate for toby (i.e. can't tell latakia from the wet rag taste of a pipe that's gone out) would have a problem with the taste of the staining.

I've got more Petes in my collection than any other brand. Upwards of 80, some new, some estate, and not a problem with a single one of them. Bought one about 3 months ago from the Petersons shop in Dublin and it has turned into a superb smoker - it's the one I smoke more than any other pipe.
I'll certainly be buying more.

One like this should solve the stain/bowl coating issue.
