The tobacco itself is good. And it has a peculiar cut, almost a shag cut. I used to smoke drum in my pipe in an emergency in college.

SO since the topping is a tad crappy, I was wondering if their was a way to create a substitute from easy to get components.

I like SH as-is, think the topping is delightful (very much similar to that used on Royal Yacht), so I can’t be of much help.

The thin ribbon bordering on shag cut does remind me of bulk Gawith Hoggarth blends, many of which also use African-grown Virginias and burleys. I’m thinking specially of Kendal Gold or Kendal Mixed.

But given that you have now dogged this excellent blend in two different threads, perhaps it’s just not for you?

i like the tobacco itself, the topping is a rather queer choice. As its not much of a smell, and not much of a taste. but it DOES work well as a throat irritant if you chase the flavor.

I listed some suggestions in my response above if it’s the cut that appeals to you. Gawith Hoggarth makes several options cut in that super-thin ribbon bordering on shag, and their leaf quality is arguably superior to Peterson’s (STG), usually with more strength to boot.

I have started exploring Peterson tobacco, bought a peterson pipe and felt i should try peterson tobacco. And I have a special fondness for certain of the old Murrays produced blends.

I enjoy this Holmes blend tremendously. Its one of the few that gives me a good flavor, mainly burley but i do get something else from the virginias in it. But the flavoring/scenting crap.. I hate it.

It hurts the throat. But I love the taste of the tobacco itself.

I have read of some people ageing it long enough to "burn" off the flavoring crap, but none ever said how long it took.

The blend is barely topped as it is, also they are nothing like the old Murrays era blends. First your pipe is melting from captain black now your throat is burning from sherlock holmes, a mild blend. Tell me about my socks again.

More nonsense from this dude.
