I bought my first Peterson pipe the other day. I should have it tomorrow. Before this I have never spent more than $15 for a pipe (clay tavern) and I have never owned or smoked a briar. Im looking forward to it but have heard a million different ways of breaking it in, cleaning it etc. So im a little nervous about it. Also, this was on Cupojoes website and was listed as ebony. On other sites they look brown and in the catalog they are said to be gray satin. Does the color change from year to year? What should I expect for a break in period? Half bowls for a while, wet the inside, use honey, shake the ashes? Yeah, im a noob. But with meers, cobs and clays you don't worry about it. Just stuff and puff. I really love the look of the bent bulldog and immediately fell in love with the dark color and nickel band.

I just stuff and puff but do it slow at 1st so it don't get to hot, smoke it like this a few times that's the way I do it. Some do it other ways just go slow and not hot all will be good.

I love Peterson's but they are renowned for taking a while to break in, like the others say, do it slow and don't let it get to hot, if smoking outside in a breeze pipes tend to burn quicker and hotter so be careful. :puffpipe:

If the description said Ebony than you should be getting a lovely dress black pipe. Petersons will occasionally do the Ebony finish along with a given ranges standard color finish.
Breaking it in, you've gotten the straight info already from the fellow members above. Smoke it slow to avoid getting it hot.
Beautiful pipe for your first briar and welcome to the forum!

I believe the ones offered on cupojoes are in fact the ebony (black) version of Fermoy. Pipesandcigars has some in the grey satin finish, but im fairly sure yours will be black. You'll have yourself a sharp looking pipe for sure 8)
I have a 80 in the Donegal series, and with its small bowl size you should be able to just go ahead and smoke full bowls to break it in. Do like ace57 said and just smoke slow and try not to get the pipe too hot. I personally don't/haven't wetted the inside or used honey on the inside to help speed up break in. Why rush it? Half the fun is getting to know your new pipe 8)

Ok, got the P80s today. It really does feel great in the hand. Im looking forwarded to getting this broken in and being able to smoke a whole bowl from it. As for the color, a minor disappointment. I can live with it, but it was listed to be ebony and it is actually dark brown. Still a beautiful pipe dont get me wrong, but it is not black. I posted a picture of it in the "pipe talk" section.
