Peterson. What can I say? I love the brand. But last three pipes were off. All with same problem. Stems are noticably leaning to one side. No, it didn't ruin my day, nor did it put me off. Definitely not happy, but just few pipes. Waiting for the holiday mailing problems to go away before sending them to the factory.

Something changed with pipes from 2020. The mortise is not as deep, the draught is more centered in mortise, and most of the stems are not straight. Stems were never all that straight, but never looked this bad.

Still love 'em.

they had me take a picture of the receipt or a scan and send that in and then refunded the money or at least that is what they said. I threw out the receipt but I really trust they would have refunded it. Especially since they asked for it again. That was at S.P..
Did you tell the rep to look at their own records? All of my SP receipts from 2005 onwards are on-line at their website.
Sorry for your troubles! I don't quite see the problem with the airway in the bowl, though.
It's off-center.

I recently purchased a couple of Peterson pipes that had some pretty apparent issues.

I’m a fan of Peterson pipes, and I’m especially fond of the spigot pipes.

While I really haven’t had an issue with any of the Peterson pipes I’ve bought over the last 30 years, it’s a little confusing to me why they wouldn’t be able to notice such apparent flaws as these.

Bought an 03 smooth with an amber stem that wobbled back and forth while the stem was seated. Fitment obviously out of round.

Bought a Pub pipe that was drilled off center, and the draft came in 3/16” below the floor of the bowl...

You’d think that their QC would catch such apparent flaws.

It’s PITA to have to return these. And then your out the return postage. If buying online sight unseen, you’d think at least the vendor would inspect them visually. They take the time to photograph each individual item.

Occasionally I buy from a vendor online called Sweetwater. They deal in musical instruments. They individually inspect items before shipping them out. Once bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom that I fell in love with, and the online pics were great. Then they sent me a notice that they would not be sending that guitar, as they had found flaws in it and would be returning it to the factory. A bit of a let down, but not as bad as getting it and then discovering it myself at a later time.

Not a Pete-bash thread, it’s just disappointing to get something that is messed up and have to go through the time and expense of returning it...View attachment 59029View attachment 59030
Okay, so I actually got to see this Amber Stem Spigot in person this afternoon and the fit of the amber stem was not right--no doubt about it. The other stem fit perfectly, not that it's much consolation...

I know we have collectively said this numerous times, but Peterson makes quite a few pipes and things like this do happen. That's no excuse, nor is it an acceptance of this unfortunate truth. Peterson will continue to improve all aspects of their production, and Smokingpipes.com will continue to try to catch things like this before they ship (and I guarantee we will make right any issues that make it past us). As always, I'd happy to personally help with finding and examining a suitable replacement for this particular pipe, if that's what you prefer.

As far as the drilling on the other pipe, I can't see any serious issues based on this photo. The fact that we can see the cleaner suggests that the draft hole isn't below the bottom of the chamber. In fact, for a deeply-bent pipe, the draft hole would typically end up considerably higher than this...

In any case, we always appreciate the opportunity to make things right, so thank you for reaching out to our Customer Service team and I'm always here if you need anything else!

Mingc- Other than some aesthetic considerations, the air hole into the heel will work fine being somewhat off center.
I don't necessarily disagree. The proof's in the pudding; if it smokes fine, it smokes fine. I have a Castello with an off center draft hole like that that smokes very well. However, for the price of a smooth amber Peterson, I'd expect perfection. Or a discount of some sort. After all, it's a luxury good, which means that what you're paying for is mainly surface appeal/bling and the name.
