One of my first purchases was Amphora English and I like it pretty well but see early morning pipe thrown around a lot and would like to try another English once I get through a few more bowls of what I have on hand. Has anyone here smoked booth these blends?

Don’t want to get EMP if it’s close to the same smoke as amphora English. Should I try 965 or night cap instead for a different experience?

Thanks!

I cant say but personally I think EMP is overrated. I mean its good but its also overpriced. I think there are similar or better blends that cost almost a third less. I know EMP is a legend but….

I have not tried the Amphora but I think 965 or Nightcap is better for someone new. I think EMP has a tendency to get a little harsh when there is any over-puffing or if there's a breeze. The other two have more body and are less finicky.

If you like the smoke flavour in the Amphora and want more, go with Nightcap, plus it’s slightly higher in nic with Perique in the mix, however I don’t find it that strong, not nearly as high as Gawith Virginias…

EMP, is a mild less Smokey English.

Here's a list of all the mild/medium English blends that are in stock at smokingpipes.com, and which only contain Virginia, Latakia, and Orientals. I found it helpful to order 1 ounce samples of bulk tobacco when I was first starting out. It's a lot to choose from, but my personal choices would include the bulk Balkan Sobranie Original Match, which is the same as White Knight, which comes in a tin. On the list you'll also see others that have been mentioned. Good choices would include Balkan Sasieni, Westminster, Standard Mixture, EMP, and Presbyterian, though you'd probably do well trying anything on this list.

EMP is very light on the latakia. It's a good blend, but don't expect the strong smoky flavor of a full English. It's hard to go wrong with MM965 or Nightcap. I would also recommend Peterson Old Dublin.
