I have seen a couple of Petersons, such as the Mark Twain, that have a gap between the bit and the pipe designed into them. I originally thought it may be to hold a chain on a wind screen, but I haven't seen one available as an accessory. Any thoughts as to whether there is a function to this gap, or is it just decoration?
Thanks.
Stu

The idea on the Mark Twain and System Deluxe is that the wood at the mount will shrink over time ( a LONG time ) and there's plenty of material on the stem to where it will eventually fit flush with the shank.

Well, I'll be! Thanks for clarifying that, rcstan.

Now that's esoteric pipe knowledge. I'm not sure I know anything quite that arcane about any of my pipes.

Back to the books, I guess.

You don't have to crack the books. Google: Pipes Logos and Stamps for a site with a wealth of information on pipe designs, stamps, logos, company histories, etc. I could give you the addy but that removes the "chance discovery" of other interesting sites.
