Just got this in from Harrison & Simmonds. I don’t believe that Peterson has Flame Grain or Straight Grain designations for System pipes anymore.....
but if they did:

Beautiful pipe!

I almost bought it, but H&S never answered my questions about it: whether the draft hole hits the bottom of the chamber and whether the stem is acrylic or vulcanite. Since you're pleased with your purchase, I assume the draft hole is indeed at the bottom of the chamber!

Sweet lookin' pipe, Brobs! Congrats on the new addition to your Pete family. I'm sure she'll smoke like a champ.

Please excuse my Peterson ignorance but I just have to ask ... I don't understand the gap between the base of the stem and the shank that I often see on Peterson pipes. Does the tenon not fit completely into the mortise so the stem can sit flush against the ferrule? Why do they look like the stem is only partially inserted?

Perfectly at the bottom. All new system stems are acrylic. If it’s a new pipe and it has a bite area like on this one, it’s acrylic. ?

at first I hated them but they’re pretty comfortable and never discolor.

It’s an army mount called the space fitting system. Over time the gap closes with wear. Though you’d have to abuse the shit out of the pipe over 100 years to ever do it. The gap is to allow an army mount so it can be cleaned like a normal system while hot, but with a normal shaped stem.

way way back in the day you could choose which type of stem you wanted on the pipe.. over time it developed to just a deluxe or supreme feature.

Bite area?

I wasn't sure how old it was because it didn't look like it had any bowl coating, like all the new ones seem to have.

None of the high grades have dark bowl coatings. There is one but it’s nearly clear..

The bite area of the stem in front of the button. On these acrylic stems it’s very flat. Vulcanite is more rounded usually unless it’s a very old one.

Gap lessening with time and use? That's what I heard claimed but based on my 4 deluxe system pipes that I bought as estates and have had for 10+ years, it is a myth. Fine by me as I enjoy the aesthetics of them. Interesting that my (currently non-functional), 20 s also has the best graining of any pipe I own.

Not a myth. We just don’t abuse pipes like someone from 1900 who owned one pipe then smoked all day at sea.

how is it clogged? Where?

Assuming the clog is at or near the draft hole, but nothing I've tried has loosened it. Did use hot water, alcohol, drill bit, you name it. Even the most stubborn clog eventually submits to my attempts. So, have hope someday this will be back in service. First time it has really clogged on me in the 10 or so years I've had it.

Use the drill bit in a press. Even a hand drill if you’re real careful.

Brobs, very fine you got this one. I have been looking at it since it came on ebay but as I have 3 unsmoked 20s and 3 or 4 smoked I just looked. Nowadays I get most of my Petersons from H&S but on Wednesday I bought a x 105 amber spigot in the pipeshop here.

I have (I believe) 5 20s before this one including one silver mounted red supreme and one gold mounted supreme so I had to think long and hard if I really needed another one. Obviously I did. ?
