A couple of firsts for me. First Christmas Pete as well as the first rustication finish. It’s only the second lower tier Peterson in my collection. It’s the 5th 999 I’ve bought.
The selling points for me is the copper, which I polished a bit for these pics. From here I’ll let it patina to see how it works over all. Especially with the rusticated finish, I kind of like the idea of a knock around pipe and the dark greenish grey that copper turns might work well. I like the rustic treatment better than I thought I would which makes me kind of want to see the new cobble finish in person.
The other selling point is the vulcanite stem. I prefer it over acrylic for plips.
The two cost cutting steps that I miss is the hallmark and an inlaid P on the stem. I’m glad they didn’t use the cheap foil. Leaving it blank is far classier.
The drilling isn’t as nice as the higher grades. Like a lot of bent Petersons, regardless of tier, the stummel and stem don’t line up so there’s no chance of passing a cleaner without bending the end and doing the turning trick, or just remove the stem all together. The boring in the stummel is about 3/16 deeper than the stem tenon so I expect gurgling. On my deluxe the gap is closer to a 16th, the bore isn’t drilled nearly as deep.
Overall for the price I’m pleased and will keep it. I do wish they offered upper tier Christmas pipes along with these pedestrian editions. This pipe does feel like Peterson put a bit more into them with the stem and banding while keeping the price reasonable. A bit of a Christmas gift from Peterson?
The pics don’t do the pipe justice. I picked a darker stain and the copper is difficult to capture.
