Three bidders over $475, all three digit plus feedback. I have no earthly idea what these go for, but that shape has been bringing moon money in lots of brands.

I was watching this one too, and wow! I didn't expect it to sell so high. It is a beauty though, and I've been wanting one of those older chubby 999.

I've rarely seen chubby Pete 999's come up in recent years on the bay. So, they seem rarely available anymore. Can understand their appeal. Like them far better than their slimmer contemporaries. Guess I can consider myself quite lucky to have bought a chubby 1 in the Dublin & London line from a seller on a different pipe forum some 8 or so years ago for $50 as opposed to $500. :D

I was wtching as well. I deleted it once I realized it'll sell above my zone. Im not very lucky with eBay. Either I have a grate eye and everything I covet is rare/wanted or I'm just not seeing the value of a piece of wood that burns a weed. 8O

I have one of these, only mine is a Shamrock, Peterson second. I got it unsmoked from Pipestud and even as a Shamrock I had to pay a lot. Mine was almost $300. It was a 1947 era Peterson second. I got it to replace a similar pipe that had been stolen. It isn't unsmoked anymore however.

Who doesn't like Pete 999s?
For anyone confused by or curious about the variations, here they are in order of Chubby Quotient.
The easiest way to differentiate at a glance (there is no CQ stamp  ) is by looking at the top and bottom lines of the shank when viewed from the side. They will either be 1) obviously tapered; 2) slightly tapered; or 3) VERY slightly tapered plus the diameter of a 55-gallon oil drum.

As for getting one without having to take out a mortgage, all three of those had "stem entanglements" that made them a bargain. The top/slender one I bought as a stem-less stummel off FleaBay for $16; the middle one had a badly cut, deeply oxidized P-lip stem that further reduced its appeal to the already small(ish) market of P-lip fans, so it sold for $102.50; and the Fatty was bought by a friend of mine (unsmoked!) for just over $200 because it had the same ugly-ass stem as my medium one. (Which, by luck, I found a photo of in an old folder).
All are DeLuxes, btw, which is a Peterson grade that never has fills, and usually has pretty good attention to detail.

I love the P-lip vulcanite stems on my 999's
The P-lip itself I "get". Button shape, bite-zone profile, and etc. is 100% a personal preference thing. Hell, I wish I could make them occasionally. People who love 'em, love 'em. End of story.
What I've never cared for is that they are usually overly long, and have that pinch/squash thing halfway down that breaks the lines of whatever stummel they're attached to. Kills the visual balance and flow, imo.
That can't be "wrong", of course---it's how Pete WANTS to make them, and they haven't changed in 150+ years---but as pipes have evolved into a sculptural art form, factors that weren't taken into consideration back then now are. By the people who are into pipes as visual art, anyway.

I love those chubby's.. They are on the someday list.

I lost this shamrock for about $160 in december on ebay. Who got it? :puffpipe:

Still regret not paying more, but $500 seems pretty crazy.. ha ha..

I like those old chubby 999's. My 999 isn't the chubby kind, nor old. It is a P-Lip, the only one I own (I like it, but one is enough). Always intriguing which pipes drive the bidding up. I think that one got away from the bidders, lovable as the chubby is. The estate pipe market is on a roll.

Back to the original- here's one photo of the pre-Republic one.
It definitely looks like a lot more attention was paid to stem lines and flow in the old days, doesn't it? The stummel for that banded one is the same profile as the newer Sumo Shank specimen I posted, but their stems are quite different.
