Picked up 10 tins of 3P recently and would like to get more. I knew they weren’t the square tins anymore but was surprised by the mammoth oversized replacements. I am contemplating jarring them to save on storage space. This generally goes against everything I believe in for tinned tobacco but I could probably fit 4 plugs in a 16oz widemouth jar. Anyone else do this?

I find plugs and cakes to be kind of a pain for jarring. The jar is always too big or too small, but I don’t have a better suggestion. Here’s a half pound of cakes in a quart jar. Too much airspace in my opinion, but this is for smoking now, not cellaring, so I’m not gonna worry too much about it.
Right. I wonder how many would fit in. 16 oz wide mouth. maybe cut 1or 2 in half to fir more and displace some air. Of course the airspace thing is always a big debate for aging but since it’s already a plug, who knows. That’s one of the reasons why I tend to buy tins vs bulk. That said, I plan on stocking up on some of my favorites before they disappear or go out of reach and it’s much cheaper to buy a lb where possible but jarring flakes isn‘t easy either. A lot of wasted space for long term storage or it turns into more of a broken flake if you pack it tighter. Wasted space vs wasted $, where’s the balance?
Some people use Mylar bags. I’ve never messed with them, so I can’t give the specifics on which bags and how to seal them, but that may be the better solution for your 3P.
Could be but it still goes against my tin-hoarding instincts, lol! I’ll have to see how much more I pick up and what kind of room I have. Think of how much we could store in this tiny tins that Irish flake used to come in? Plus they’re just plain classier.
I have always kept the plugs separate and wasted the closet space. I would hate to have a jar of 4 plugs get mould.
If cellaring long term, I think I’d do the same. The 3P tins aren’t really any bigger than the 2 oz tins from C&D, etc. Slightly wider, but not quite as tall.
If space is of concern, mylar is the best solution. 7 mil mylar is very safe for long term storage, I would avoid the thinner grades.
I check my tins 2-3 times per year to make sure the seal is intact. Unless the seal is compromised, I’ll not bother the tin.

I get small jars and cut the plug into pieces to fit, I get around a 50 great plug in a 1/2 point jar easily. When I want some, is like opening a 50 great tin.
