I suppose I will yield to your points, only because I’d be distraught if I broke my new pipe. The only thing I still object to are the flavored ones. Plain would be best.

Not even a slight problem for this Peterson lover! Just smoke the damn things.
Yes, me too. When I was younger, I'd remove bowl coatings. Now, my policy is to remove only after the first few smokes, if it tastes funny. Why Since adopting the policy, I've not remove the coating on any pipe.
The last two Pete’s I got I tried wiping it off. Easy as anything - paper towel and warm water. Looks better, minimal effort. Don’t think I’ll be leaving that crud in there in the future.
I wasn’t trying to imply that these coatings are always a bad thing, if everyone read my post.
The problem for me as I mentioned is that I smoked half of a bowl and then let the pipe sit over night.
So the following day, it was like all the left over ash, tabac, and the coating turned into hardened crazy glue in the chamber, that was the problem.
So all I’m saying, with these coating, I wouldn’t smoke half a bowl on your first bowl, and then leave it over night, and expect the next day to easily wipe it out.
For me it looked like I had smoked the pipe a year and it already needed to be reamed out.
But since I sanded it out, a thin carbon build is slowly appearing inside the chamber nicely.

Same experience with a new B10 aran. Mac Baren HH Va tasted like rabbit tobacco! Reamed and cleaned then honey coated and let sit for 2 days. Still has off taste and I hope it will change. Lower priced Petersons have deal breaking quality issues. I will stick with Savinelli and Rattray for lower price pipes. Never had break in problems with either.....
They coat all of them and the coating has changed. The problem is people buy “new” pipes that are 5 years old and think that Peterson is still using that coating. They are not.So, Peterson just coats their less expensive pipes? Asking for a friend.
That tells me either my Derry is new or I didn't notice the coating.

Wish I’d found this thread before loading and smoking my new 20s. My first Peterson. What a mess. Tastes off the whole time then became a birds nest of a mess at the bottom. A hot water rinse got most of the coating out. Honestly it’s pretty sad. Why can’t we just get bare bowls. 
Unfortunately this topic sometimes glows from the heat. Bowl coatings have several reasons they may be applied, and several ways to remove same before you smoke the pipe.
They aren't inherently evil or bad, and some prefer them.

Well...Sykes Wilford might be a 'thoughtful' contributor here, but it would be a simple courtesy to reply to emails sent to them at Peterson's.

What is this coating you're speaking of? I bought 5 new Petes just last year and, as always, puffed merrily away on them right out of the box and noticed absolutely nothing amiss.

I think it's only some of their lines. I know for sure the Ebony Spigots have it. It's like a really shiny gloss coating.What is this coating you're speaking of?
Actually, all of mine came with thin coatings. But, weren't goopy and did not adulterate the flavors of my tobaccos 1 iota.
