Pete Rose was no saint but he was one hell of a player. He also played and managed at the same time. Can you imagine that today?

It seems like just about every ad you see now in professional sports is about gambling. It just rings hollow to me that the MLB took a holier than thou attitude with Rose and now it openly profits off gambling. I understand the dynamic is different when the player/manager does it.

He lied about his betting. That's the real violation here. He denied his behavior. Over and over again for years. If he'd just admitted the behavior, took responsibility for his own behavior and accepted the consequences he'd have been reinstated years before his death. Instead he opted to lie continuously. It's his dishonesty that really sank him. Obviously some here are fans of such behavior and do not think Rose should have experienced any consequences for his ignoring the rules and his dishonesty about it. I understand some think that people shouldn't suffer consequences for their actions. I find that sad but, it is the way many think, even when they are the ones being lied to. I simply won't condone such behavior.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told Pete Rose if he stayed away from gambling that he would consider reinstating him. A year or so later in 2015, when they met to discuss it, Rose said he had quit gambling. However, during the conversation, Rose was pressed about it, and he finally admitted that he was still gambling on sports, including baseball. He only admitted that he gambled on baseball after Manfred's private detectives, who were watching what Rose did, showed Rose their reports that proved that Pete was still lying.

This quote is from Manfred's decision not to reinstate Rose:
"He made assertions concerning his betting habits that were directly contradicted by documentary evidence. … And, significantly, he told me that currently he bets recreationally and legally on horses and sports, including Baseball," Manfred wrote.

In a footnote, the decision adds: "Even more troubling, in our interview, Rose initially denied betting on Baseball currently and only later in the interview did he 'clarify' his response to admit such betting."

In every locker room from rookie ball to the majors, there are signs telling players that they can not bet on baseball. It's in every contract that they sign, too. Rose did not care.

From start to finish, Rose only had himself to blame.

As a kid that spent his summers in the seventies in Indianapolis, I had to be a Reds fan or face ostracizion.
Joe Morgan was awesome, and Pete Rose was iconic.
He belongs in the HOF
