pappy, sounds like some wild duty. However, on shear small size, I have you beat. MSO 489 was 172 feet long. And like your ice breaker, it was round bottom, but in addition, the hull was made of wood, Washington spruce. I won't try to compare it to an ice breaker; we stayed in the Mid-Pacific. But for ride, I bet it was equally crazy -- pitch, roll, and much yaw -- diagonal motion. You thought you were all the way at the end of the motion and it would go a little further, and then more.

mso - when you said wooden hull, I figured it had to be an old minesweeper. I worked an oil spill case once where what must have been a sister ship to yours had been decommissioned and tied to a dock near Seattle. The hull settled to the bottom at an extreme load tied in 1976 or 77 and decided it didn't want to float back up when the tide came back in. It still had a large amount of Bunker C oil in the tanks
Sad ending to a Navy vessel.

That's it! You scurvy dogs have pushed me over the edge. I'm adding some to my order today. I should be smoking it in about a week.

Off the DMZ, our main battery (largest weapon system) was a ... wait for it ... mortar! Can you imagine a trajectory lobbing field weapon on a rolling deck? Nuts. So when we needed to intimidate a suspected 'Cong junk, we'd spray slugs from a 50 Cal machine gun fired from an upper deck. We didn't hit nor sink anybody while I was aboard. Of course, the junk fleet would leave behind one or two slow-chugging boats with grandmas and grandpas aboard and take off with (probably) the weaponry shipment in the fast boats. But that was 'Nam. USS Gallant, as you see, is probably still commissioned by the Taiwanese Navy under "an assumed name." Those U.S. ship builders did one hell of a job in wood, no less. At the beginning of the first Gulf War, CBS featured USS Gallant in its coverage, interviewing enlisted sailors. By then I was long out of the Navy, very surprised. Soon after, the ship was decommissioned.

After having a tin sitting around for a year without cracking it I decided it must be time to stick at least a toe in the water. I have to say that Black Frigate is not at all what I expected. I imagined a sopping rum/ tobacco mess which sounded pretty good. What I got was... Well not very rum heavy, but a very interesting and (to me) unique experience. This tobacco tastes like a well charred steak. I have now smoked four bowls of it and I am really enjoying it. I can see myself getting a few more tins as this is a nice after (steak) dinner smoke.

If I did not know there was Latakia in BF I would could not say for sure that it is even there. I am sure it is adding something but it is not the stand out.

The Latakia's far in the background. You may enjoy it.
I agree. It's really not a lat heavy blend. It's there, and noticeable (at least I think so) but it's just enough to keep things interesting. It's a condiment in this blend, not the main course.

crack that baby open and enjoy a bowl!

I just ordered 10 tins. I also grabbed a Savinelli 320KS to dedicate to this blend.
Geeez! Save some for the rest of us, you hoarder! I just ordered a 320 late last night (well... early this morning really). I talked myself out of a Monsieur and into a Marte. Was actually a tough decision, but I think the Marte spoke to me a bit more. What line is your 320?
