Perique

I have been smoking a pipe for a little over six months now, and I have been trying lots of blends to see what I like. Early on I tried Elizabethan, and I liked it but it didn’t wow me. So I didn’t explore any other perique blends.

Until now. I got my delivery of Watch City Rouxgaroux, and it was the first time I really lit up and thought, “holy cow—what the hell is that?!” Than today I opened a tin of Haddo’s Delight (which I also bought from Watch City), and I am in love. Wow.

I love Rouxgaroux as well! You might also want to try St. James Flake from L.J. Perretti. Very good stuff!

Do revisit Elizabethan Mixture. It’s one of my favourite VaPers

I find that I don’t taste the perique much in that blend. Perhaps as my tastes develop I will notice it more.

Early on I tried Elizabethan, and I liked it but it didn’t wow me.

Sutliff's Elizabethan/Victorian Match is based on Murray's iteration of the blend. I like it much better than Dunhill/Peterson's version as well as preferring it to Rouxgaroux.

One of my favorite GLP Va/Pers, one that gets little mention, is Stratford, After Haddos, Stratford is my favorite of Pease's VaPers.

Stratford is fantastic stuff. Another rarely mentioned favorite of mine is Temple Bar. Stratford really hits the spot though - easy to pack, easy to smoke, tastes great.

. In all seriousness, Perique is a wonderful condiment and certainly is a gift from the real LA.

Pretty much all of my favorite Virginia blends have a hefty dose of perique. I’m not too fond of straight virginias or oriental forward blends. My two favorite va/pers I’ve found thus far are bayou morning flake and windjammer. I know c&d makes a blend called exclusive which is 50% perique.

When I was younger, it was not hot enough unless I had sweat pouring out.

Now I prefer to taste what else is in the dish

I love perique! I stayed away for a long time because everyone talked about it being so strong. But once I tried it myself I never had that experience. I find it’s just different. It has a nic hit but the strength is a different flavour is all.

G. L. Pease once stated that smoking straight Perique is like having a frontal lobotomy.

As my brain doesn't work well to begin with, I've stayed away from that experiment.
