Perique What blend should I try?

I like pepper a lot with food and I hear Perique has a pepper taste. Not sure what blends to try to truly get a feel for the perique though. I like English blends thus far. But I want to try something that I know for sure I am tasting the perique but not overwhelming. What do you recommend in the way of a tin blend to experience perique? Look forward to your suggestions to help build a shopping list to try. My current all-day smoke is 306 English Oriental.

I don't know if it's for you but The Country Squire 50th Anniversary blend is amazing (VaPer) Unlike their other blends it is tinned and I have stocked some for aging.

Funny as I was going to suggest Bayou Night , they are both great though cant go wrong , though Bayou Night is considered a Scotts English (cavendish and all I guess)

St James plug or flake, Cabbies mix are the two I reach for. Both are VaPer’s but there are plenty of others made by Peterson, C & D, G. L. There are myriad blends with Perique in them.

The flavor will vary quite a bit depending on the blending and varietals.

I guess my recommendation would be C&D’s Kajun Kake and Watch City Cigar’s Old Dominion. Kind of at each end of the spectrum for me.

I recommend trying a sample of bulk perique, as well as a few other basic blending tobaccos to mix with it. A little experimentation can really give a feel for what you're looking for.

I'll add Poplar Camp and Old Joe Krantz to the list. Both are pretty heavy Perique blends.

Bayou Morning seems to highlight the peppery flavors, while Poplar Camp, to me anyways, is more plummy, and OJK musty and barnyard like.

Perique is good.

Some others that present it more often than not are C&D Three Friars, Daughters & Ryan S.J. Rimboche, Pipes And Cigars Anniversary Kake, and sometimes I just smoke a bowl of straight perique when I really gotta scratch that peppery itch. There are certainly other blends, these are just some I have tried and had luck with. Perique is fickle because it either delivers the stone fruit notes with little to no spice or it gives you deeper mushroom or truffle like notes with the spice, at least that's what I've experienced so far. Anniversary Kake I like because I notice the stone fruit spectrum with the black pepper spice.

I am trying C&D Happy Hour right now. The only thing the 100-mile-away local shop had in stock. I get a light taste of the Perique thus far. I think I will order some of the suggestions here from online and see further what I may like. Thank you and everyone that has provided feedback. The hunt continues. Much appreciated.

Other users have made good recommendations. For me, St. James Flake certainly has a peppery flavor. I think of it as "savory" and lightly sweet. Watch City's 558 (my current favorite) is sweeter; its spice is rather mild. Peterson's De Luxe Navy Rolls fall somewhere in the middle of these two flavor profiles.

There are hundreds if not thousands of blends that have perique in them. I enjoy Six Pence by G.L. Pease.

For a very straightforward Va/Per, look at either of the Daughters & Ryan Rimboche blends, SJ or AP. Rimboche SJ uses St James Parish perique, and AP uses Acadian Perique. Both are well made from quality ingredients and were created by Mark Ryan of La Poche. At $27.50 for a pound bag they represent an excellent value.
Also very good are Stratford, Fillmore, and Haddo's Delight, blended by G.L. Pease.

Yes, Bayou Morning fits what you asked for. There is no subtlety about the "pepperyness" in this one. Many other blends have tamed the perique into behaving a bit more nicely.

Well, I got the C&D Bayou Morning and also the flake. Starting out with the Bayou morning blend and enjoying it much so thus far, will be interesting to compare it against the flake next. Thought I would smoke the full tin then move to flake and see the difference. Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. And thanks to the Racketeer B/M shop bringing it in for me to try.
