Somebody please rescue this flailing noob. I had come to a conclusion in this crazy world of tobacco roulette and was just about to bet my last nickel on number "perique".
Then holy wow I fall in love with a bowl of Westminster (zero perique) and go golly... Is it POSSIBLE that it's NOT perique I'm in love with after all. So I fire up a few VaPers (Bayou morning, etc) and go yeah it's good indeed, but not the end-all I had dreamt of.
Can anyone explain whats going on?
How can Westminster taste EXACTLY like perique to me? When it has none.
I'm trying to figure out what like.

Not sure either. Glad you are stoked about Westminster. It's an excellent blend. I think what may be going on is that you discovered Latakia.

Think I'll go and fill a bowl with some perique, straight, and smoke it.

Taste buds can do strange things.
Lots of factors can come into play.
Were you using a different pipe?

I smoked a dozen bowls of both in a couple different pipes

Possibly the red virginia. It can be tart and fruity. You could be getting some spiciness from the latakia similar to the peppery note from perique. Some combination of these things, maybe.

If you had smoked a perique mixture in a pipe before you smoked Westminster in it, the Perique would have “seasoned” it and you would taste the Perique in the Westminster.

This is why we dedicate pipes to specific blend types.

Just keep smoking.
Smoke everything you can afford that appeals to you.

And one’s perception can easily be coloured by lots of factors.

I made it through half a bowl last night. I am sure that I know what perique tastes like. It didn't taste EXACTLY like Bayou Morning, etc., Westminster. Not to me. Sorry, can't help you out.

Exactly. Maybe it would have been better to say: As a perique lover, I was surprised at the similarity of Westminster, and how much I enjoyed Westminster. How do I continue to explore why my attraction to Westminster that has no perique? Any recommendations for similar blends to Westminster?

Smoke more Westminster and other blends that have no perique. Forget about perique for a few months.

Or, get a blend or two which a very perique forward and discover if you actually can identify Perique (one of the great things about Perique is the range of flavor it contains: from fruity, figgy, spicy etc). For a very forward perique blend try Wilke "Lizzie Final Verdict" which is 40 % perique or Boswell private Stock. Lots of other candidates out there as well.
