The post on Hal O' The Wynd, and the subsequent mention of a touch of Perique being used, reminded me of this video.

It has been linked here a few times over the last couple of years.

So, with so many new and enthusiastic Members I thought I would post this interesting bit of History for your enjoyment.

Hmmmm.... A Perique has no Perique in it... Who'd a thunk it.

Webster's dictionary.

I guess if you wind any variety of tobacco like the gents in that video, some will call it a perique with a lower case p.

The Louisiana product was originally distributed that way and should be spelled with a capital P.

....just guessin'
I thought Pierre Chenet learned how to process Perique from the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians.

The dictionary says he introduced it. I dunno...
I'll stick with Mystique Of Perique. Also Passionate About Perique.

That's a good amount of work for about 6oz of perique lol
Some day I'll get around to printing out all the wonderful articles on this website and puting them in a tasteful binder for my own personal use. So much information. I'll make an effort to place a copy in each of my restrooms for reading while guests use the lavatory. :puffy:

Interesting stuff!

Does the tobacco made into the perique become Perique though, as i thought it was made by fermenting in it's own juice under pressure? (A lot like will happen in the video). A process rather than a leaf, like Cavendish tobacco?
I would loved to have seen the result 6 months later!

I bought a 1 oz jar of Jewel of St. James Perique. It has a wonderful aroma. I've been looking for a nice Virginia to blend with it. A bit more reading, and I'll give it a go. If I use the 5% proportion I keep running across, I could wind up with a pound of VaPer, with what is left from sampling. Anybody have any VA suggestions?

Kevin - I did, but after i replied!
So perique is both a tobacco and a process?
I wonder how a perique of non-perique compares?

@Danno--I would suggest some McCranie's Red Ribbon or Red Flake as a blending component for your VaPer experiment. It's one I've used with the St. James Perique, and it's just this side of nirvana. Another possibility would be some McClelland Christmas Cheer--I've used the 2005 & 2008 and they're excellent. Obviously my tastes tend toward the bright & sweet notes of Virginias; your mileage may vary.
