Perfect for me, that is. No idea where your tastes lie. I'd have bought this pipe in a heartbeat if it were not for one thing. Whoever put the "embellishment" on the shank, seemingly as a demented afterthought, should have the sh*t slapped out of him. I do not understand the almost militant low IQ need to deface a wall with graffiti, nor do I understand this. I'd pay maybe 50 bucks for the pipe. Apparently I'm not alone: the pipe has been sitting on the site forever.

The shank carving doesn't bother me much but the fact that it's a rhodesian will keep me from buying it.
Kind of off topic but... I remeber talking with a pipe smoking friend about if we would have to stop calling the shape Rhodesian and start calling it a Zimbabweian. This conversation took place on the afternoon Mugabe and his "freedom fighters" won the election. We were at the headquarters of the Rhodesian Light Infantry in Salisbury.

Can't help wondering why it is they do not produce more standard plain billiard models without any carvings
They do but there's less demand for them. Meerschaum collectors more often go for elaborate floral, lattice, and basket carvings that are typical of the material used. There's also the greatly increased price of those that are left plain.

It is difficult to contemplate. I will try to see it upside down. As you rightly say, it is like the horrible graffiti on a wall in the streets of a beautiful city.

Seems like carving continuous lines in fragile material is just asking for breakage.
That was another consideration. It's on the shank, of all places. I had this guy's head drop off for no reason while smoking. Seriously, it just fell to the floor, as though he had been guillotined. The pipe had never been dropped. The pipe, as far as I can tell, was genuine block meerschaum. I suppose I had been smoking it a bit heavily, so maybe the shank had become saturated with moisture and therefore soft or something? A flaw in the material? Dunno. Anyhow, I don't like weakened shanks on either briar or meerschaum.

That's a new one...don't think anyone's ever reported such a thing before. I wouldn't think moisture could cause it...I would guess it must have been a pre-existing flaw/crack.

At the beginning I didn't really pay much mind to it, but now you brought further attention to it, it is actually rather unsightly.
I smooth pipe would have such a better affect on the eye.

I much prefer the rusticated and lattice ones to smooth.
