As I enjoy English/Oriental Blends I am exploring different blends trying to avoid blends too similar to each other. So far I tried McClellands 3 Oaks Syrian (probably my preferred so far), McBaren Vintage Syrian, Kramer Father Dempsey and I have even if not opened yet McClelland Samovar and Wilderness, Ashton Artisan blend, Brebbia Balkan and Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader.
I am looking at Peretti offering and I am attracted by the Peretti Tashkent and Peretti Oriental No 40. My question is: are these two Peretti blends different enough to justify their purchase in view of what I already have or are just too close to some of the ones I have and a similar duplicate?

Peretti Tashkent - Yes, it is unique and unlike any other blend. Peretti Oriental No 40 is also unique. Of the two, I would get Tashkent.

Jack is right - they are both unique and pretty darn good. I lean toward the Oriental 40 because the latakia is more in the background, and that's where I like it.

So it looks like I should get both. Any other unique blends different from the one I already have? I think I bend more toward balkan rather then english blends.

Well, if you like BurPerVas, I am a big fan of the No. 8 slices.
I have not tried the Cambridge flake but I have heard it is also delcious: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/870/peretti-cambridge-flake

Huge fan of the No, 8 slices. Hit it hard on the last "Flake Sale." The Cambridge Flake is most excellent as are all the the six I have been laying up.
My typical order is

No. 8 slices

Cambridge Flake

English 110

Oriental No. 40

Royal

Tashkent

Have a pretty good amount of these six laid-up. Always order the 8 oz paint cans, Love the old school packaging.

I find Oriental 40 to be more like the Balkans you've already stated you like. Tashkent is a little closer to a standard English mixture, IMO. It sounds like Peck thinks the opposite. If you've tried it, Star of the East from C&D is very similar to O-40 (and MUCH cheaper). I haven't yet found a good sub for Tashkent.

I prefer O40 because it is more floral and oriental forward with the Lat playing a more supporting role. The Cambridge Flake is delicious, if I remember corrrectly it was more of a broken/crumble Flake/cake. It was more Latakia forward than the Oriental #40. You can't go wrong with any of the three blends for an autumnal smoke.

Why mess around with the English blends when their Cuban mixture is right there?

All Peretti blends are unique and hand-blended in Boston.
With that said: Tashkent. Without reservations.

While Tashkent was my sunrise in the woods smoke for several years, I've shifted to LJP Royal in the wild these days. On the other hand...

Here's what LJP British looks like. Again, Hand-blended.

[just dumped some out on a dish for this image]

Or to quote Patrick Swayze's character, Dalton, in Road House (1989) when asked how tough/good he was, "Opinions vary."

So...

I just sent Alex an LJPeretti sampler: Cuban Mixture, Tashkent, British Mixture. Each an ancient and classic from their respective lines of a great US blender.
Maybe somebody'll send him some of this Oriental 40, you speak of...

[PM me for his mailing addresss, as he's sort of a newguy]

Thank you Tom for the unexpected gift. I will let know everybody what I think of these blends when I'll receive shortly, I have to admit I have great expectations.

I received the generous sampler Tom sent me at last,

I am smoking the Tashkent first, have yet to get to the Cuban,

But damn me if this tobacco is not good, I expected the usual sourness that comes with Latakia blends,

With Tashkent though, despite of complete absence of Virginias it is nothing like that, it has that bittersweet quality, it is beautiful. It reminds me of the Grand Orientals from Mcclelland minus that mildness of those blends that bored me.

This is the first Latakia blend after Penzance that made me feel so good about it.

You have my gratitude, Tom.
