I got through my selections of bright virginias, some with varying degrees of perique. The winners were PS400 and OGS, with st James flake as one with great flavor that i cant get a consistently good experience from quite yet, so ill come back to it later. After drying OGS to knock down the added flavoring, it and PS400 taste identical to me - both predominantly like a mouthful of sweet cashews. These are the first tobaccos that had me digging at the bottom to make sure there wasnt any left to enjoy.

Moving on to reds now, and the first one ive tried is Per Jensen Port Guardian, a tin produced August 2025. The tin note is an intense tangy dark fruit, like hibiscus and blood orange. VERY intense. I was so excited to try it because if it tasted anything like it smelled, i'd be very happy. Going very slowly at the start of the bowl, i can get some of that flavor but it was fleeting. It soon descends into something i'd describe as walnuts that have had all the flavorful oils pressed out of them, and you're just chewing on the chalky remnants. Or maybe tree bark. It is smooth, just not very flavorful and not sweet at all. I havent found many tobaccos i've tried to be overly astringent, but this stuff dries my mouth out to the point where i cant smoke it without a cup of water. Even with water, by the end of the session my tongue feels dry / raw, not like tongue bite, its not burning hot. It is just so drying. I should mention that this tobacco is relatively dry out of the tin, no air drying required.

The tin aroma and how it starts off slightly present in the smoke at the beginning and quickly dissipates makes me wonder if this has some added flavor/aroma. Has anyone else experienced this with Port Guardian?

Savinelli Juno is the next red on the list to try, hopefully it goes better than this one did!

Keep smoking it. It takes a few smokes to understand a blend. I like to leave new tins in their tin for a week or more before moving to a jar. The exposure to air can make a blend open up.

A few months back I opened a tin of Burley Flake #5 that was a few years old. The tin reeked of an alcohol like apricot topping. The first few smokes were not good. The topping was way too much and no matter what I did, my mouth was under assault from this blend. I left it in its tin for a week or so before I went back to it. I am glad I did, it is now one of my regular smokes.

I haven't tried Port Guardian, but I've had other VA blends dry my mouth out, akin to chewing on cardboard or something like that.

Im smoking Savinelli Juno right now just to see if maybe reds aren't my thing. It's wonderful! So, so smooth and the citrus tang is still there halfway through. I also get wheat bread. I'll just air the Port Guardian out and let it sit for a while and revisit, as y'all recommended.

Is this your first Virginia blend produced by C&D? They can be a little more... rustic... than those from other brands. Not as sweet, and with less flavor help from fruity casings/toppings than you might be used to. I appreciate and enjoy them, but it's paramount to smoke them as slowly and carefully as possible. Try leaving flakes in larger pieces rather than rubbing them out completely, and if my tin is on the dry side, I'll sometimes pack firmer or add a little hydration to slow it down.

I've been curious to try the new Per Jensen Virginia blends, but I'm waiting on the sidelines and reading more reviews before I pull the trigger.

Yep it is. Good to know! I have been reading that some people think C&D red virginias specifically are tasty. Savinelli Juno has the same tangy citrus smell but smokes much better than Port Guardian, at least my batch / in my hands. Perhaps the double stoving makes it more forgiving.

I haven't tried Juno, but I am adding it to my list to try. I didn't realize it was a red dominant blend and it sounds really good
