Captain you better open that Gaslight. Especially if it's getting nippy where your at. Love the stuff.

The ingredient list on Tobaccoreviews only shows one different ingredient between the three, but I've always heard that Penzance is more of a Virginia blend than a Lat bomb, and I've tried the other two and they are definitely Lat bombs.

Just going by what I've heard, I'd look to a light English for something closer to Penzance than anything heavy in Latakia.

But there's more good tobacco out there than I'll ever try, expecting to try every blend out there is like expecting to collect every type of snowflake.

Penzance is like an incense that slowly changes flavors as the bowl progresses, sending the latakia to the back and the orientals forward and then slowly coming forward again during the smoke. No noticeable nicotine, just pure flavor, in a church, mass, monks Gregorian chanting and incense burning kind of way. Afterwards your pipes seems cleaner and happy.
Gaslight is a latakia bomb guitar driven explosions that goes off in your mouth with a dirty spray of smokey shrapnel, perique holes splattering your tongue, buzzing B bombers humming filling the air, whistles of latakia dropping carpet bombs of flavor across you tongue, BAM BAM BAM leaving your tongue exhausted and deforested and waving the white flag. The room note is that of burning cardboard. And, my pipes needs to be cleaned as it smells like the butt of a cheroot that was crushed out by a boot in the beer sodden floor of a dive that Mickey Rourke would look for prostitutes in.
Other than that, they are both tobaccos.
Great rant/review/response! Put this one in the highlights reel. Kevin needs to start giving awards.

Hahaha Cosmic, something sure hit a nerve. I have saved a tiny amount of Penzance in a jar just to smell and compare. It was a quick whiff on both and might have been influenced by a comment by someone somewhere about the two. I smoked a tin of Gaslight several months ago but never bought another until I smoked Penzance and wanted to compare the two again. I'm just starting to smoke the Gaslight. Penzance crumbles up in a unique way from other tobaccos I tried, nothing seems to compare to that in my experience so far. I not too keen on the leafy crumble that Gaslight has. I have tried to "saw" off cross grain to reduce the leafy effect.
Anyway, great responses. Seems there is no end to the Penzance discussions.

I like them both and of course for different reasons. Are they the same no, but I don't consider one better then the other.

Yo hawke - re: " Penzance crumbles up in a unique way from other tobaccos I tried," - Smoker's Haven's Krumble Kake crumbles the same way. It is also made by J F Germain, so the two blends having the same process isn't surprising. H&H's Ten to Midnight has a similar texture, but is usually much harder and less crumbly.
A number of Hermit's Captain Earles wonderful blends, like Ten Russians and Stimulus Package are likewise similar, and Bow Legged Bear, several Two Friends and other C&Ds share the same characteristics. These all look like rubbed out mixtures which are then pressed into the crumble cakes.
The magnificent Gaslight is a plug along the lines of traditional Euro-plugs, whereby whole leaves are layered in big blocks, then the whole thing is compressed (and maybe using steam presses). I myself don't peel plugs, since the blend composition is best expressed by cutting flakes as a cross section of the plug. Peeling leaves off the plug would give you only part of the overall composition, as well as misbalancing the remaining part of the plug.

I've never seen the elusive Penzance anywhere ever!!! Some think of it as the Holy Grail. Maybe it is because of the Orientals in it. That part right there has me very intrigued. I love Orientals. I guess I will just have to keep searching like I have for the last 3 years since first hearing of it. OUT OF STOCK!!!

Some get their jimmies in a roar over the stuff. Others move on. Gaslight is worth moving on, if you can't obtain the Lord Penzance.

"NO!! They are nothing alike, except that they are cake-y and black. Taste-wise, they are like peanut butter cookies verses Vienna Sausages. Nothing, nothing, nothing alike at all."
Watch out, Michael. You silver tongues devil, your going to sound like you have an opinion about this.
I love this forum, really! What can you read for free and have so much fun from so many great guys?

Sweet Jesus can we stop with the penance comparisons? Let it go. It's a unique to its own tobacco some love it some not so much. Can't something be unique with trying to find an equal? There's a reason it can't be found. It's the best unless you're smokin stonehaven...

Good one!

When I am out of penzance I can't stand the stuff, when I have some I like it!
(customer asks, how much is your penance?

clerk says, 25 per tin

cust., the store down the street only get 15 for a tin

Clerk, I suggest you buy from them

cust says, They are out

clerk says, when I am out, I only charge 5 for tin)

I'm afraid I know not of this "Penzance" of which you speak, nor am I aware of gaslight, but I'll certainly look them up and get back to you.

No comparison. Penzance is Penzance, nothing else is like it. Gaslight is better in my opinion, but they are two different blends.

Its like saying everything tastes like chicken... chicken tastes like chicken thats it!

Gaslight sounds delicious. When we compare two blends like this, we're really comparing what they appeal to in each smoker to gauge our own enjoyment off of what we know of others.

This conversation is a dime a dozen. Mention other unicorns and folks proclaim beating dead horses, fanboy booty love and more.
Enjoy your own tobacco the way you like your tobacco and you will never go wrong.
