Gray, you underscore the real 'problem' here- that production of these fine tobaccos is nowhere near meeting the current demand. I do wonder whether these blends would be so popular if they were readily available. I think their scarcity adds to that desirable, hard to find mystique, especially for a demographic that is probably more than a little pretentious. Point taken on markups, but really, is an Ebay auction started at or below the product's retail value gouging? I think not. Perhaps it is a moot point anyway, as most retailers put a purchase limit on these high demand tobaccos, effectively prohibiting significant profiteering by private parties. Kasbah, the "tobacco rules of Ebay" have nothing to do with what we are talking about. Everyone winks at the rule stating that a tobacco tin is a collectible container, not sold for the value of contents. Everyone, including you, knows the contents value, so perhaps they should not have tobacco auctions on Ebay at all if it is going to bother you when you can't afford to bid. It is quite transparent that you are really just upset that you didn't get some baccy you wanted.

Excuse me, but who are you to think you know what I can and cant afford? It really doesn't seem like I am the one that is "bothered" here. I clearly struck a nerve with you but it's no grounds to come out and attack me like a petty fool. For what it's worth I ordered a tin of each the Penzance and Sobranie, so no I am NOT bothered because I couldn't afford to pay that rip off price. Guess what I bought them for? To try and share with my friends and other forum members if either of them are not to my liking. I didn't buy them to hose some people with more money than they know what to do with and put some chump change in my pocket. I regularly will pay some top dollar prices for vintage tins but I'll be damned if I pay that much for a blend still in production that doesn't even have age on it.
In short, don't be butt-hurt and issue personal attacks at me because I don't approve of price gouging that you and others participate in, it's unbecoming and you know nothing about me. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.

Hmmm ... ya well. Everybody's own choice to elbow their way through life, or play nice with others and contribute to good live for everyone. There is no law that says I have to hold open a door for an older lady, but I decide not to slam it in her face because I know that such a little thing can very well make her day. For the same reasons I don't buy ALL the hard to get tins at my local B&M because I know that someone else might come in who had a shitty 18 hour day, and finding such a treasure might very well put a smile on his/her face. Live and let live. I thought pipe smokers among the rest of humankind had a little bit more sense of Zen ;-)

hfearly, that's exactly how I feel. Thank you for vocalizing it in a beautifully analogous manner :)

I've never tasted the elusive "Penzance" as every time it comes available,it seems I'm working or doing somethin...

to hfearly's point about charitableness: at a pipe show I ran across 2 tins each of 2 blends that I had been wanting - Dunhill Elizabethan and GLP Renaissance. Moreover, the prices were sinfully low. So I bought just one tin of each, leaving the others to elate whoever else was craving them.

It is the opposite for me. Either I'm at school so I'm not working and have no money, or I've spent my money on other pipes and baccy. I was lucky enough to have been gifted some from my Secret Santa last year. They also gave me some Escudo.

Kasbah-
Call me sensitive, I guess I am offended when people go around calling complete strangers "detestable" in what is supposed to be a friendly community forum. I am not issuing "personal attacks", I am pointing out that I think you are wrong. You are right, I should not presume to know your circumstances, motivations, etc.- for that I apologize. In fact, I shouldn't even care what you think, I don't know anything about you.

Impatiently waiting for the mailman to drop off either the package or the pink slip for the package from SP containing the two tins of Sobranie

Monday. Mine comes in Monday. No rush since I don't think that ill be getting to these (Sobranies) any time soon. These are not going on eBay, although I do wonder what they would fetch.
