This is the reality of the working photo-journalist. I dabbled but, wildlife shooting was my choice. Only two unbreakable rules; 1) be there! and 2) be ready (anticipate). Of course the lens you really want will be at home! So, pick your perspective and capture the best shot possible.

No dictator/politician wants unflattering photos circulating in public. Photographs are necessary for the proper image.

I've got to admit that back when I was considering taking up the hobby of Civil War Reenacting, my thoughts were to kit up as one of the traveling photographers of that war (many of whom were from Brady, but not all).
Never did get so far as to try to build a 4x5 to look like the field cameras of that day, but I was thinking that if I shot on B&W Direct Positive paper, I could get the photos of the event tourists and participants &such to them by the end of the same day.
Not having the funds to kit-out the kind of specially outfitted wagons that those photographers used, I should have been able to make do with a period tent with some extra dark-proofing inside for a darkroom.
But none of that came to pass for me.

After a day of playing with this, I’m convinced that if you don’t own a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera and want one, a Pentax K5 (or K5 II or K5 II S) with the weatherproof 18-55 kit lens is hands down the best choice.
The best reason is, after you reset it to factory defaults, anybody in the world can take stunning high quality photos using Program.
After your skill level increases, these just cannot be much excelled. The reason to own an advanced enthusiast camera is ease of using controls to adjust the camera.
The K5 had front and rear control wheels.
Also, there is a devoted button or switch to select ISO, Exposure Compensation, Drive, Auto Focus Area, Metering Area, Single or Continuous Auto Focus, Back Button Autofocus, and Depth of Field preview.
It’s made of magnesium, has built in flash, is weather proof, professional grade, and takes about 25 million used Pentax lenses made since 1976.
It won’t accept the latest KAF4 lenses made since 2016 but those cost so much a beginner won’t be interested.

Honestly, one of the best cameras I own is the one in this IPhone Pro 16.
But you would look odd, using it for tourist shots.
Why a Pentax K5? (Image quality was the same for the K5 II and K5 II S)
Because you can buy a thousand dollar Tamron f2.8 70-200 for it and a $250 battery grip for only $300.
The Pentax K5 had outrageously good image quality, among the best still today for APC sensor cameras.
It was good to at least ISO 6400. They are even usable to 12,800 ISO. You got a professional grade shutter rated at 100,000 clicks that sounds like you’re part of the press pool for the President, making seven silky soft clicks a second with continuous autofocus.
And it had internal stabilization good for four stops, on any lens. They don’t need stabilized lenses. That Tamron 70-200 f2.8 in the mail will focus using the screw drive in the camera body. With the battery grip I’ll get over 2,000 shots, plus have controls for portrait orientation.
These were top of the line, weatherproof, magnesium, $1,600 best grade Pentax flagship cameras in 2010.

In my opinion, one of the finest mechanical SLR's ever made! Great for students! I've still got a couple of those bodies, gathering dust they are but, available.
