#5 hands down. In a pinch you could make or acquire a bushel basket of pipes quite cheaply but it wouldn’t do any good if you don’t have tobacco to smoke. Don’t get me wrong, I love pipes and still suffer from PAD occasionally but … the pipe is the tool, smoking your favorite blend is the purpose of the whole thing. If a suitable and functional smoking pipe can be made from a corn cob for crying out loud then surely there are unlimited options for getting a pipe in your hands. Would you rather have a Bentley with no gas or any available transportation with a ready supply of fuel??? Unless you’re planning on sitting behind the wheel making vroom vroom screeech noises and leaning dramatically as you navigate through fictional corners having an empty Bentley seems a bit pointless….

Speaking of … is there any defensible reason for not including an “all of the above and to hell with penny pinching” option????

Actually I'm more in the "none of the above" category. I have more tobacco than I expect to smoke over the remainder of my allotted span and more pipes than I can conceivably use. For some time now my pipe and tobacco purchases have zoomed past enthusiasm and are well into compulsion territory.

You have got your shopping list. Now hit the online retailers beginning with SP and study, study, study.

Actually, I wouldn't attempt to do all this at once. You won't do a good job, because you will be buying an inventory. Whether pipes or tobaccos, I'd buy them one item at a time, or just a few tobaccos in small quantities, and buy from experience as you go. Buying boxes of stuff at once will get you many things that were bought hastily and are ill considered. You have to suffer quite a bit of thought to get it right.

Is this like the 6 (but really 7) days of Christmas? 😀

I chose “1”.

No theoretical for me. Since in two weeks time I’ll be off the pipes for a few months I solidified a commission yesterday. Have pretty much no idea what it will look like other than stem shape and will be a total surprise when it’s done — figured I’ll have something to look forward to!

Looking at how the world is changing around us and the potential impact to this wonderful pass time I am casting my vote for #5.
