Discount Tobacco Outlet near me where I buy my cigarettes, never noticed these over there before.

Not looking for another pipe, and while I like my Ropp j16 as a beater pipe, I don't like that it has a vulcanite stem, and I kind of feel like the all-day workhorse should be an acrylic stem because to me, a workhorse should be no fuss, and vulcanite is not no fuss... you can't forget it in the car, can't just leave it out etc unless you want extra work fighting oxidation.

Anyone know if this Grabow is going to be acrylic or vulcanite? I didn't bother asking because this is a cigarette store and they probably have no clue, I was honestly shocked to see pipes at all in there (though not shocked that the brands they do have are... well the brands that they are). Does Grabow say on their packaging what the stem is? I'm actually half-ass considering it...

I totally agree with you that a workhorse pipe should be an acrylic stem. All of my most-used pipes have acrylic stems and they're all either Savinelli or meerschaums at this point. Let us know whether or not you pick up the Grabow.

In about a week and a half or two, next time I go buy cigarettes, I might grab it if it's not more than about $40.

I'm going out of town next week (on Wednesday) and my cigarettes are hard to find (Camel Wide Menthol, I talked to this particular store and told them if they keep them in stock, I'd buy them), so it depends how many I have before I leave for a week if I go back in and buy another carton. I just bought a carton today and have 3 packs left from my other carton, so likely not until I get back.

I smoke a modern Dr Grabow Savoy every day, often multiple times a day. I’m ok with the plastic stem. It does develop bite marks, but they’re like the bite marks in soft vulcanite. Smooth. It forms to my usual clenches. It never develops the rough feel that my MM plastic stems do. It’s About a year and a half old now and still great despite heavy use and rough treatment . I’m pleased with it

I'm not a clencher, so that's a non-issue... but if I were, I wouldn't care about tooth marks on a daily driver.

I like the plastic stems.

Just dont take it apart. The tenon connection is shitty. I just leave the stem on and water flush 'em.

The pipe I smoke most is a newer model Grabow, and I like it alot.

Matter of fact, If I knew which Discount Tobacco that was in I might go buy it myself... It's hard to find new Grabows that don't have spot carvings all over.

You can find them on line at West Virginia smoke shop. Unlike most sellers they take grabows out of the plastic pack, take a pic of the actual pipe. They tell you if it is smooth, grooved or spot carved.

I take my grabow apart after every smoke for cleaning. Never had a problem with the tenon

Yeah, I guess I should have added YMMV.

I've had trouble with the metal tenon wallering out the the wooden mortise. YMMV
Yeah there can be some sharp edges in the slits, in the metal tenon. My least favorite tenon around. But for the money, a Grabow is an actual pipe you can smoke. so there. Haha.

Dr Grabows are nice for the price.

All that I’ve ever used have been decent enough.

What is the pipe with the yellow section?

Garbage prop... probably Fujima like the others in the case.

Never heard of them before and a quick Google search took me to a listing on Amazon of 12 pipes for $60... that tells me all I need to know about them.
Yeah. If you’re looking for a a decent cheap pipe then Dr grabow is perfect imo

Yeah, I just saw that about Grabows, might not now, I don't use a filter and I smoke my filter-accepting pipes the least because I hate having to clean out the void left in the mortise/tenon. I had tried one of those plastic adapter things in them, those didn't help at all to prevent buildup sitting in there.

I was in there again today and had them do a price check... $64. Also, it is spot carved. Spot carving doesn't bother me, but I'm not paying $64 for a Grabow when I could support a small, proper, tobacconist and get one for $45-50.

Between the $64 and the fact that Grabs are drilled for filters, I passed. My filter pipes smoke just fine without filters... it's just the extra cleaning they need if you don't use filters and especially for a beater/workhorse, I want the least work possible.
