As I posted elsewhere, I think Quiet Nights and Gas Light holds its own against Penzance.
I encountered another English blend recently that really impressed me: Magnum Opus, a Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Perique blend created by Russ Oullette.
It is a refreshingly different take on Lat blends and was a hit with the members doing this month's tobacco crawl.

(http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/pax-tobacco-crawl-with-russ-ouellette) If any of you have smoked it, feel free to drop by and give us your feedback.

I have been looking forward to trying Gaslight and Quiet Nights for a while.
Right now I am working my way through a tin of Abingdon. I am really enjoying it. I have not seen it mentioned here. Where does this one fit in compared to the GLPease blends already mentioned?

Gaslight has been defined too often as being a Latakia heavy plug and for those who haven't tried I say disregard those rumors. It has so much more to offer and the Latakia provides a backdrop for the other variatals in the blend. It's a creamy, smokey, mouth filler. I'm not much of a craft beer guy but it would go great with a dark stout IMO.

I had some Quiet Nights a few days ago, it definitely gets top marks. The charing light was as flavourful as anything I've ever tried, and the flavor was fairly consistent through the bowl.

On the subject of good Lat blends, my first good Latakia experience was just mixing bulk Lat with G.L. Pease Cairo. At 50% it was pretty one sided but at 25% Latakia it was basically just as good as any other Latakia blend I've had.

Cairo seems to be a perfect base.

I need to try pure Latakia again, something like Pirate Kake is too earthy for me, but it's hard for me to say right now if I prefer blends with less or more than 50% Latakia, or if it's other stuff that makes some blends work better for me than others.
