Pipe smoking is a journey, things change, maybe you smoke a little different. As of late I notice I am smoking partial bowls of tobacco. I sip about half the tobacco then set the pipe down and let it go out; do other things a while then smoke the rest later. I wondered if others did this as well.

My input is the same as it's always been, I guess.

I'll put a pipe down temporarily if I've started a bowl and need to do something it's in the way of and if whatever too much time is passes I won't return to the bowl (assuming I wasn't going to dump it because it was disagreeable for some reason). I'd say if it's been sitting there more than an hour I'm dumping it (and frankly it may be no different at that point than it would be in twenty four hours, but that's me).

I'm usually setting aside time for pipes vs. performing tasks, etc. and plan to sit and just enjoy it while relaxing/reading/listening to music/catching up here . . .

I think I will be all partial bowls. I have a 17 month old toddler so doubt I will get the time for a bowl at a time.

It will be interesting to find out how long people leave partial bowls before feeling the need to dump.

I rarely sit down and smoke a bowl start to finish. My first bowl in the morning is usually whats remaining from the night before. I usually have 3 or 4 partially filled bowls at hand. I eventually smoke them all to the bottom and then refill them at the same time,

Lately I've taken to smoking on my 30 minute commute, half to 3/4 on the way to work, set it down in the cup holder and relight for the commute home 10hrs later. Sometimes it's the same going home as it was in the morning, sometimes I make an ewwww face and set it back down.

I frequently set down a partially smoked pipe and return to it later. I'll give a bowl about 48 hours before I decide to dump it. Usually there's minimal change in flavor.

I've gravitated towards small chambered pipes, preferring ones about 17-19mm wide by 25-30mm deep, because I just have no need for a big chamber. Even these small pipes typically last me 30-45 minutes. I almost never have the time or inclination for a smoke lasting more than an hour. If I want to smoke longer, I just reload the pipe.

The luxury of being retired is that I can usually set down and enjoy a 30-to-45-minute smoke. My wife is currently wheelchair bound and isn't supposed to have any weight bearing on her feet, so I am constantly getting up to get something for her or doing a small chore for her. Most of the time I just set the pipe down and get back to it as soon as possible. Usually, I can get back to the pipe within an hour. It still tastes good.

I'm cheap lol :) If I don't have a lot of tobacco left I dump that into one part of my 3 part ashtray. After cleaning my pipe I put what I smoked earlier in the middle of the new bowl. So I rather usually repack my new bowl with fresh, then old then fresh.

I do my share of smoke, set down and come back like you do. About half the time for me I can nurse it back to where it was. :)

I have a cheapskate technique that I've been employing for some time with success. I put a small amount of dirt cheap, dry, plain tobacco at the bottom of my bowls. It soaks up the moisture at the bottom very well and gets tossed out rather than wasting my more expensive blend, which all gets smoked. My "good" tobacco waste is basically zero.

Currently, I'm using some D&R Penhooker Silver that I got for about $2 per pound during the Cup of Joe's closure. It smokes alright on its own, too.

I do this too. my favorite pipe holds 2 coins of escudo perfect and I love the first half of the bowl more than any other tobacco, but the 2nd is meh. so I've just started doing one coin on top of some D&R windsail so I just dump it when I get through the escudo.

I knew I couldn't be the only one who'd tried that. It's like using keystones or meer chips, but much cheaper and less gimmicky.

I just did this for the first time yesterday. Had a bowl of Maltese Falcon and about 1/3 of the way in to the bowl I came in to eat and read a bit. Then went back out to finish my pipe. It was delightful. I think I’ll do it more often as sometimes I’ll get bored but feel the need to finish when I could just occupy my time with other things and come back to it.

This is what is referred to as "Delayed Gratification Technique", or DGT, a term also used to refer to the practice of filling a pipe to enjoy later.
I frequently practice the former, but rarely the latter.
