Last night, around 1 am after returning home from work, I went to my "office" for a relaxing smoke. As I sat puffing with contentment and reading an old Aviation magazine there was a loud crack like a gunshot. Something ricocheted off a wall and landed on the carpet in front of me. It was a large chunk of glass from an ashtray sitting on top of a bureau a few feet away from my chair.
After I got my heart restarted I looked at the ashtray. It was completely shattered with most of the pieces still arranged in the general form of the ashtray. It was a round, amber colored one that sits in a wood bowl with a pipe stand on the side. A mound of pipe tobacco ash was undisturbed in the center of the wreckage. Not a bit of it was blown out of the broken bowl which is hard to imagine considering the force of the destruction.
That ashtray was at least 35 years old. I would think if it were going to break due to some internal stress it would have happened a long time ago.
But of course, I'm sure there is some natural, scientific explanation for this....... shiver
