Last night, around 1 am after returning home from work, I went to my "office" for a relaxing smoke. As I sat puffing with contentment and reading an old Aviation magazine there was a loud crack like a gunshot. Something ricocheted off a wall and landed on the carpet in front of me. It was a large chunk of glass from an ashtray sitting on top of a bureau a few feet away from my chair.
After I got my heart restarted I looked at the ashtray. It was completely shattered with most of the pieces still arranged in the general form of the ashtray. It was a round, amber colored one that sits in a wood bowl with a pipe stand on the side. A mound of pipe tobacco ash was undisturbed in the center of the wreckage. Not a bit of it was blown out of the broken bowl which is hard to imagine considering the force of the destruction.
That ashtray was at least 35 years old. I would think if it were going to break due to some internal stress it would have happened a long time ago.
But of course, I'm sure there is some natural, scientific explanation for this....... shiver

I love those old-school amber-glass ashtrays! They stir nostalgic feelings for me, just like the gold-foil, stamped metal Burger King ashtrays. 'Course, add to that the plaid-bottomed beanbag cigarette ashtrays and the big red barrel-shaped soda pitchers from your local corner pizza joint...sorry about your haunting, tuold, but thanks for bringing back some memories!

Your pipe is probably ghosted, you'll have to exercise it with a new blend.
On a serious note that is very freaky.

Any music playing? (Sonic trip)
Any ET's around broadcasting on supersonic airwaves that might have tripped the ashtray??
(By trip in this case I mean that which caused the shattering, as in tripping a bomb. Oh, dear too many puns.)

Sounds like another reason to wear a tin-foil hat while smoking!
You mean you don't always wear one while smoking? Make sure you have tin foil over the TV because Obama is watchin you...

[/quote]It was an accident! Second time I've tried this out of body stuff. I'll be more careful in the future.
Hilarious.
Yeah, totally a ghost. It's well known that they don't like vintage ashtrays. Everything else is generally cool with them though. If it happens again then start worrying. Right place, right time.

The ashtray crack is definitely a potential SETI message saying "Hey fellow, you are enjoying some good baccy!"

I'm not sure I'd want to go back out there either! He looks to be right out of the "Dead Man's Cellar".
